Posted June 27, 200915 yr Hello Could any one advise me on what to do here - 2 days ago one of my baby budgies was not alive in the nest I don't know what happen to it - but it has totally stressed me out because this is only the second time my female bird has had babies the first 2 have turned into lovely birds and are doing well. In regards to the baby bird that passed away was another baby in the nest and the mother tossed it out, when I went to put it back in the box was when I found the other one that passed away Over the last 2 days i have found it at the bottom of the cage trying to fend for itself its only 20 days old - ( born on the 7th June 09 ) Tonight is very cold and it was out of the nest again - I've bought it inside in and I've put it in a cage but what do I do to feed it? Its quiet and asleep at the moment but i'm sure its gonna want food sooner or later tonight or in the morning Can some one tell me what to do and if this baby has any hope of surviving now i've brought it inside out of the avery? I must admit - Its seems pretty good considering Mum wasn't in the nest she was just huddled in the corner of the avery with dad and the other 2 babies she's had previously. Also its just sitting on the bottom of the cage should i make some sort of nest for it to sit in or should i just go and put it back in the nesting box and hope mum goes back to it?
June 27, 200915 yr Hi Yummybird and welcome!! I'm sorry I can't help with your question....but the guy's on here will, just keep checking your post...
June 27, 200915 yr You have to warm it urgently. Your body heat will do for a start. When it is warm, feed it. See this link http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....mp;#entry282239 Keep it warm.
June 28, 200915 yr 20 days old is very young to be fending for its self. sounds like the parents either know there is an issue with the chick and have left nature to take its course, or the parents have had enough with breeding and just abandoned it. Sad in either case You will need to create a brooder and/or provide heat with a 25 watt light globe. Plus you will need to hand feed the chick hand rearing formula. I dont know personally how to hand raise a chick, but there are many members here who know how to do it. Here is some info in the FAQ's http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...ht=hand%20raise
June 28, 200915 yr I think the mother may have gone out of breeding condition or become unwell partway through rearing these chicks. If it was a pair in a breeder cage you could have removed the mother and let the father finish raising the chick, but aviary is very different. If the chick is well and strong it would feed off a bent spoon at this age. You can feed it budgie starter with a little handrearing mix in it too. Keep a warm lamp by the cage its in.Can you catch the Dad and put it in the cage with the baby and see if he will feed it...the sooner the better. Also its just sitting on the bottom of the cage should i make some sort of nest for it to sit in or should i just go and put it back in the nesting box and hope mum goes back to it?use an upturned icecream tub and use budgie seed for its bedding. From two weeks of age babies in the nest pick around looking for food. With seed as its bedding it will try the food. Dont hold out hopes for the mother caring for it now...wont happen. Dad may do if you can bring him in. Edited June 28, 200915 yr by KAZ

June 28, 200915 yr Author Hi Everyone This is surviver Today has been a very good day for both of us - i now have him / her eating nicely from a syringe I flew down to my local perbarn this morning and the lovely staff supplied me with some (Avione) hand rearing fomula which didn't work to begin with but then a friend rang and said try using warm water instead of cold and baby gobbled it all up - its asleep now but i'm ready now with a little bib & paper towel on hand - I've actually got baby in another nesting box in the house and it seems alot happier now than it did in the small cage. I'd like to thank you all for coming to my aid I only resuced mum and dad from an abandon house and really know nothing about budgies but in the last 7 months they have become a great pleasure to our family - The lady from the pet shop has worked out why baby was kicked out of the nest and thats because mum is laying more eggs which she thinks is weird because that shouldn't happen until September but once i told her mum has been having babies and eggs every 8 - 9 weeks she had to come and see for herslf - The first two babies are handsome looking and mother was more nicer with them then the second 2 she had on the 7th June I named this baby budgie surviver because he /she got tossed from a great height and survived 3 falls now if it only stays happy with me feeding it - then it will live in the house with us always instead of back in the avery.
June 28, 200915 yr Two clutches is enough in one year. Removal of nestboxes will stop incessant breeding. Keeping budgies in an area with nestboxes promotes them to breed. You can stop it and rest her by removing the nestboxes. If you cant, then remove the mother to a resting cage. Good news about the baby. Edited June 28, 200915 yr by KAZ
June 28, 200915 yr Thank goodness !! he/she is soooo cute!!!!! You've done a great job keeping him alive....well done.... If there is a nesting box/boxes in your cage/avairy I would remove them as soon as you can, It might deter mum from laying more eggs.....
June 28, 200915 yr Author I wish I read this link last night - http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....mp;#entry282239 I printed into word and have it the fridge now thanks again everyone and thanks for having this site on the net for people like me to learn from Thats a great idea i will take the nesting box out in the morning if no eggs are in it and i can get her out of it Edited June 28, 200915 yr by YummyBird
June 28, 200915 yr Thats a great idea i will take the nesting box out in the morning if no eggs are in it and i can get her out of it Ignore the fact of eggs and remove it anyway. She needs to rest. Throw away any eggs so she can.
June 28, 200915 yr Author okay i will first thing in the morning its to dark outside now to do it Why has your picture got two heads if you don't mind me asking
June 28, 200915 yr okay i will first thing in the morning its to dark outside now to do it Why has your picture got two heads if you don't mind me asking The two budgies heads are two babies in a nestbox. One is a show type budgie baby and the other is a pet type baby budgie. Kind of shows the difference in sizes
June 28, 200915 yr Author Blimey now you told me i can see the breeding box hole ..LoL.. glad i asked though or i would have been wondering was it born like that - I'm giggling to myself here
June 29, 200915 yr I'm glad you finally read the link I gave you. There should have been instructions on the formula you bought. Handrearing food has to be warm - about 37 degrees. The food from the parent's crop is that temperature. Test the temperature of the food before you feed; you don't want to burn the chick. Check the crop; for as long as there is food in there, the baby is okay. The crop is the first bulge going down the neck. The second bulge between the legs is the stomach. The crop bulge may be the bigger one at times. Well done to keep the chick going. Do post progress reports. We care about Survivor. You've received good advice on how to stop the breeding. Do that. If you allow them to keep breeding, there will be disasters and may be not only for the chicks.
