Posted June 27, 200915 yr We got a new budgie following the loss of our other... Its quite soon but it does help a bit Our quarantine cage got broken so we got him a new one so he's got all new toys and a cage while he's in quarantine lucky little fella. The breeder said he was a male but we'll really have to wait and see I think. He's a recessive pied, he looks normal blue in the photo's, but in real life he looks greyish blue. My girlfriend wanted to call him Dunkin so we did. He's got some seed, millet spray, apple, carrot and lettuce (not iceberg) so hopefully he's a bit more accepting of his vegies unlike my other birds! How good are birds hearing? The indoor avery is at one end of the house in the lounge room, and Dunkins cage is at the other end of the house in the spare room, with the door closed for the time being, and they're all trying to talk to eachother already!
June 27, 200915 yr He's a gorgeous little chap. Is he named after dunkin donuts or is he named after the song, 'i love to have a beer with dunkin'?
June 27, 200915 yr Author unfortunately he's named after dunkin donuts! trust my girlfriend to choose something to do with donuts! just figured out his colour is called mauve oh and i just noticed the date stamp on my camera is out by a month hmmm lol Edited June 27, 200915 yr by wezzaman
June 27, 200915 yr He I believe is a SHE and is a Mauve Recessive Pied, the cere lookes to be a whitish tan or maybe it is just the picture?
June 27, 200915 yr Author i think its just the flash of my crappy camera hahaha his cere is actually that pink colour that you can see in the photo but all over i can see how he looks like a she in the photo's though
June 27, 200915 yr In my signature, you will see Pretty he was a Sky Blue Recessive Pied, his cere was very pink all over
June 27, 200915 yr Author oh he is VERY 'pretty'!!!! they had a sky blue recessive pied at the breeder i was at.. i didnt spot it until i was leaving.. i should gave grabbed both i tried to convince my girlfriend that we should get it too but she said if i did i'd have to name it chocolate so we decided against it
June 27, 200915 yr or is he named after the song, 'i love to have a beer with dunkin'? Love it! Your new bird is very cute!
June 27, 200915 yr Author Thanks He is a beautiful bird, so placid at this point. I've only had him for about.... 15hrs now.. but i don't think he seems to be eating? He hasnt touched his fruit and veg, doesnt seem to have touched the seed or water either. Is that still the shock of the new home etc? Ive been trying to hand feed him the lettuce apple and carrot. He doesnt really have it unless i rub the very bottom of his beak with the food and then he nibbles it for a second and stops. I tried holding the food container to him but because i couldnt rub his beak with it he didnt seem interested. I hope its just the shock of the new home He's made an impression on everyone though! My girlfriend was on the phone when I got him and she was talking to her friend about him when i got him. Her friend is demanding photo's hehe. Also, i caught my girlfriend saying good morning and goodbye to him this morning before she went to work He's made an impression on her! Mind you, our cat has taken up permanent residence outside the spare room door where he is. I'm thinking about putting a blanket there because they're tiles and im worried the cat wont budge no matter how cold it gets
June 28, 200915 yr Really cute Does kinda look female in those photos. Will wait for other photos to be sure ( no flash ). Great cage. Suggestion...redo the perches so they are either side of the cage front to back and Dunkin can then fly across the cage. The perches set up the way it is just makes them sidle along the perch and fly across to the cage front etc. Edited June 28, 200915 yr by KAZ
June 28, 200915 yr Author The cage isn't square.. the perches wont fit the other way around they'll be too long. He should be okay for flying.. I let him out of the cage today sillly me left the blinds open he flew into the window lol it was kind of funny but i felt soooo bad for him i closed them and then he was okay. We played chasey.. well more like he sat at the top of the blinds, i tried to get him so he went and sat above the door. This continued for around 10mins, until i finally convinced him to come down. The nice thing was though I didnt actually have to grab him.. he sat himself on my finger and i moved nice and slowly and put him back in his cage with no fuss he's learning very quickly actually. He also LOVES his swing. He'll sit on his swing and he'll let me pull it forward and it swings madly and he sits there bobbing his head up and down and if i dont swing it again after it stops he just looks at me lol He also lets me pat him... well sometimes i can pat him and he'll walk up and down the perch away from me but not stressed out like not fretting.. if i get him in the right spot (on the side of his neck) he turns his head around embracing the scratch hehehe he's a REALLY good bird. He is also eating now he's been eating his seed. Oh and he actually plays with his little mirror with beads!
June 28, 200915 yr The cage isn't square.. the perches wont fit the other way around they'll be too long. The idea is to recut them so they do fit. Mirrors are not a good idea for budgies. Edited June 28, 200915 yr by KAZ
