Posted June 26, 200915 yr Oh God I have done it again! A guy rang me to organise for me to pick up three tiels and two budgies as he did not want them anymore (the Budgies will end up for adoption when they are cleared so keep your eye out for that on the for sale section) Anyway while there he brought out his Eckkie Ella, she is so cute but small for her age, not eating and her poo is really the wrong colour. I had a chat to him and said he really needed to take her to the vet. Well he was on the big bird boards and basically got told that an Eckkie was to much to handle andhe should look at giving her to someone that knows what they are doing. So at 10.30pm last night i set out to point cook to go pick her up. His mother insisted that he get his $450 back for her (I think he would have given her to me for free but hey) so I paid just to get the little girl out of the situation, either way $450 is NOTHING for an Eckkie, hand tamed ones down here are going from $800 - $1500 and if she does not tame down enough to stay with me a friend has a male and a large avairy so I know she has a home no matter what. Or as my sister says we can build her an avairy outside. Well last night he said he feed her 40ml (she should be on 52mls per feed) we got another 10mls down her when we got home, but today we struggled to get 15mls down her.... going to ring around the vets and hope my boss lets me duck out for an hour so that I can take her in. She is also coming to work with me today as I know my boss (not my normal boss I am moon lighting on a weekend job) will be cool with this as she is an animal lover. So yeah I got an Eckkie! :grbud:
June 26, 200915 yr Hope she picks up for you and all goes well. They're fantastic birds, I've wanted one for years. They're on par with African Grey parrots intelligence wise so not only can they learn a multitude of words they also know what they're saying. Along with words they can be taught things like colours and object names too. I think they're supposed to be like a 3yr old child. If your eclectus asks for an apple and you try and give it a bannana it won't be impressed :grbud:
June 27, 200915 yr How old is she and how much does she weigh? Feeding 40-60mls would be normal for an Ekkie. I have hand fed out two of them. They can be tricky, especially when they switch handfeeders late in the weaning process. Did you get a chance to run up to the vet with her? Paul
June 27, 200915 yr Author Hey guys an update. Went to the vet and Ella has worms, thrush, bac infection and crop issues. Vet gave her two shots and she is on bactrim for 5 days twice a day. We also have a pretty specific feed route to undertake. We are hot boxing her till next thursday when she has another apptmt with the Dr. Really sad thing was when the vet said that if we had left her another 24/48 hours she would not have made it so glad I pushed for them to fit me in today. We hope we have managed to get meds into her enough that we can save her but the vet said the next 48 hours will be the teller, if we get her past that then she should pull through okay. Will keep you updated. oh she weighed in at 350 when the vet said she should be closer to 450 Edited June 27, 200915 yr by KAZ
June 27, 200915 yr Author Pics are coming, she looks a mess at the moment but I am going to photograph a bunch of birds tomorrow so will try and get picture of her tomorrow
June 29, 200915 yr Author WEll we had a set back. Ella has a fit today. I took the day off to stay home with her and then I went out to get a coffee and bank a cheque came back said hello to her and then she sor of rolled to one side and started rocking her head back from side to side and her feet twitching and making really strange noises. I grabbed her and drive straight to the vet and tried to hold her so that she did not shake around to much like you do with dogs. Well the vet sore her stright away and gave her anti seziure meds. WE are not sure what caused it and have taken bloods and other samples for testing. We ruled out environmental as I am very bird safe with what I use in my house. We think it might be something as simple as she was mucking around and hit her head and had a fit or it might be a brain wiring thing we are not sure if she will have more down the track basically we don't know squat and will not know again thing untill we get results. We decided that she should come home with me as if she fits over night there would be no one there to help her so going to move her box into my bedroom tonight and will be taking her to work with me tomorrow. Still going to go back nd see the vet on Thursday. Have no clue what is going on that that scares me. On the upside she has put on weight! Now she is in her head box sleeping.
June 29, 200915 yr Oh, that is upsetting! She is going to be a lot of work for her new mum. She will be worth it, though. Some lucky fella you got her from. Ella would be dead now if she'd stayed with him and his $450 gone. (Ella is luckier though - she got you.) All the very best to you and Ella!
June 29, 200915 yr Aww... hugs AV. Good news about the weight though! I hope there are no more issues. xoxo
