Food Variety

Hi everyone,

I would like to know how you get newly purchased birds to eat a variety of foods, I just purchased two pair off a breeder and they wont touch anything but seed.

Ive provided them with carrot, corn, peas and egg & biscuit mix and they wont have a bar of any of it. I dont know if the breeder provided them with anything other than seed so i think that maybe the start of the probelm.

Any solutions? or just keep providing it and hope they get curious.

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben....there are a few methods.

1. try differing ways of serrving it.........grated, finesliced, hanging from pegs in the cage, skewered on kebab skewers etc

2. Start with just a few easy to use vegies.....frozen and defrosted baby peas and corn ..they love corn for its sweetness.

3. Mashed boiled egg.

well theres many ways, but one way is to sprinkle the birdseed over the top so they get the taste of the vegies accidentally. All it takes is one budgie to start eating and the rest follow.

Best you persist and offer something everyday and eventually they will crave it and seek it out.

Kaz gave you good suggestions and probably some that were in the FAQ but if you go to the FAQ under the Health and Nutrition Section, there is a thread there too about having them eat different foods that will assist you too :)

Thanks KAZ,

Ill give those ideas a try, i think the seed sprinkled over the top will do the trick. They chase me for the seed container when i top it up as it is, so i think they might go for that. Cheers

Sorry Elly i thought i had read this forum back to front, i didnt even see the other posting. There is alot of handy information on here guys, keep up the good work.

Better then any book ive found so far!

Thanks again for the help Ben

I've tried mixing baby food into their seed, covering veggies with seed, hanging banana and apple in their cage, providing sprouted beans and i'm still not having much luck :[ I'm going to try hanging some spinach leaves in there next, as they eat eucalyptus leaves but only when they are dry and crackly.

Try corn first and grated carrot :hmm:

I've tried frosen peas and corn, and had grated carrot in a mix I mixed with seed... I just bought some bokchoy and parsley to try.

I think alot of you people are getting to wraped up in

trying to feed to many different things to your Budgie.

They are mainly seed eaters,a little silver beet is all

they need as long as you are feeding good quailty

seed,they will do okay.

I've also had problems getting 'Harry' to eat anything other than food & gum leaves. I have persevered with the boiled egg, grated carrot, peas, corn, alternating, mixing it all together, and he has had no real interest at all. He may nibble a bit at it, but basically ignores it, doesn't even pick it out & throw it on the floor of the cage!

After reading through the nutrition forums again, I bought some endive, bokchoy & some broccoli, shredded it all up, mixed it together, and thought here we go again....and voila to my surprise he dug right in! A lot did end up on the floor of the cage, but that I think is because the little feed container I have is too small, I will get another on the weekend. This morning before I left for work, I mixed some egg in with it, and I noticed he was eating the egg too.

My advice (for what it's worth), is persevere, this has taken approximately 4 weeks to tantalise his taste buds, and I am soooooooo happy, and I hope Harry is too!

I had success too! I succeeded with the leafy vegies... Started with the Parsley and now on to Bok Choy, which they love. I'm now giving them Bok Choy every morning when I let them out and it's been attacked by the time I get home to put them back. So happy!

don't give up, I tried for 6 years to get Harley to eat veggie. every two days I would give him fresh chopped veggies, frozen ones, grated ones, whole ones and nothing then one day he decided to try a celery top and then BAM veggie monster!
