Posted June 22, 200916 yr Hi there, was just wondering if breeding pairs should have other budgies within sight or is it better that they can only hear them, rather than seeing them? The female in question seems rather interested in the other bird across the room rather than her mate. I separated this pair after they bonded in the avairy and now she seems uninterested in her partner and is constantly on the go, doesn't stop moving. And is it normal that the male budgie shows more interest in the nest box than the female? Thanks
June 22, 200916 yr I have my breeding cages across from each other so that they can see other birds that are down for breeding, I have males that seem more interested in the breeding box than the hens but they still breed okay.
June 22, 200916 yr it is usually best to have birds able to see eachother in the breeding cages i think my rezults from breeding this way have been very good i use wire cages one inch away from eachother stacked on top of one another as well the bird your talking about will not settle if she can see and hear her chosen mate it is normal practice to place new paired hens and cocks away from calling distance from eachother as to beable to make the new bond chossen for them i hope this helps here is picture my cages this one new pairs normally my cages are two high apone eachother my bird room has been improved since then but then i went and took all breeding cages back to aviry as i have more success
June 22, 200916 yr Yes! Budgies are very social birds so they like to be able to socialise (albeit from inside a breeding cabinet) and the sounds of mating and chirping chicks also stimulates them. I've also heard that if you break up a pairing and the new partner is not being welcomed, by positioning the old mate opposite you can encourage its acceptance.

It has more to do with going from a large space ( aviary ) into a small space ( cage ). She will settle down. And YES its more often than not the male who inspects the nestbox first and does the old nudge, nudgie, wink, wink moves on the hen Breeding budgies are fine if they just hear the aviary birds, and dont have to see them. Seeing others in a breeding room helps too of course. Edited June 23, 200916 yr by KAZ typo
June 23, 200916 yr Author Thanks for the help everyone. I look forward to her calming down as her mate seems to be ready for her to be. I like that term 'jailbreak' behaviour, because now that you've said it, it's exactly what she appears to be doing.
