Stray Cats!

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm having problems with stray cats coming into my yard & jumping up on the cages (they are suspended) & startling my budgies.

Is there a way to deter them??

Thanks

The only thing that stopped cats coming into our yard and getting at the birds was having dogs in the yard :D

Can you post a photo so we can advise better solutions ?

i guess their comes a time that if you start lossing bird as i did before i moved due to stray cats at night its time to get a cage from your local council

first catch i returned to owner with dead birds they had frightend and killed durring night and warned that if i caught it again i would bring it back one more time after that if their cat went missing to call the pound to collect it

you will find that cats are not allowed out of their own yard and are to be locked up after 6 pm at night till 7 am in morn

responcable cat owners heed these rules so dont feel bad if you are in desperate situation as your birds mean as much to you as someones much loved cat

after all you did warn them and if you dont know who owns it the local vet can scan it for micro chip free of charge

Well i remember a bloke who lived up the road from me a few years back, he had eclectus and sun conure's in his aviary's, and one of the stray cat's kept getting on top of the aviary and startling them.but if you want a solution, you can ask the council for some cat traps and catch them, then the council comes back the next day, collects the cats and traps and then tests them to see if their registered microchipped etc and usually they find the owner and fine them for leaving their cat stray on the street.

edited out the "how to poison cats instructions" ....lets be NICE Matt

I bought a cat trap, If I catch one (on my fourth now) then I call the council and let him know that it's in the cage by my front door (under cover) and they come and pick it up and take it to the RSPCA the guy knows me now and even calls me to confirm that he has taken the cat.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I will ring the local Council in the morning & enquire about some Cat traps.

2 Cats down thanks to the local Councils cat trap!!

Work a treat don't they! The great thing is that if they are infact strays then at least you are getting the strays off the street and stopping them from breeding if they are someones cat then at least you are helping return a family pet and hopefully teaching the family a lesson.

Someone once told me that a male stray can mate upto three times and day and be sucessful.... a female can have up to 5 litters a year at 4 - 10 per litter!

Oh yes they were definitely strays......hissing & clawing as soon as you went near the trap!! Wasn't good....haha!!

There are still a couple more roaming around, so fingers crossed they find the trap!!

I'd known cats were prolific breeders but....5 litters a year????? Gosh!!

eewwww cats :D im allergic to them and theyve killed at least 3 budgies of mine.... i dont like them one bit

I love cats, even wild stray ones. They are my most favourite animals, budgies close second.

I just can't understand why some people hate cats. They are a very useful natural predator to control unwanted mice and rats.

Everything can be useful, but clearly not these cats, as these beautiful living creatures have now been executed by the local council.

Cat killers.

A pair of geese is a good backyard deterent for many animals and burglars, geese can be quite aggressive to strangers so make good guard geese, they are usually friendly to their owners if raised from youth, and the cost of ownership is less than dogs because your governments haven't yet decided to rip licence fees out of you for it.

If you allow it, all your freedoms will be taken away, and it will be of your own doing.

If you have a cat and it lives inside, then i am all for it.

Outside cats do more damage to the native wildlife. They hunt and kill native birds and native mammals.

Arguing that cats are good because they kill mice and rats is like arguing that the cane toad is good as it eats the beetles/moths/whatever in the sugar cane fields.

I am all for people having cats if they keep them in their own yard and put a bell on them to warn the native wildlife. Unfortuantely, the stray ones have caused so many problems I would rather have none then domesticated and strays

I'm with you DrNat on cats ( we have four )..... :( I also think your geese idea is very good :thanks:

There will be some good news on cane toads in a couple of years, wait and see, someone will do some research on them and find that they have within them the panacea cure for some kind of illness, then everyone will love cane toads. Go queenslander!
