First Baby Is Out Of Its Nest

Featured Replies

hi, my mum has her first baby and today found it out of its nesting box. He/she was sitting on the bottom of the aviary. There was only one baby that hatched.

Its somewhere between 3-4weeks old.

But after keeping a eye on it all day , she has noticed some of the other budgies are picking at it.

Unsure even to explain how its looks to secure the correct age.

Can anyone tell me ..does the mother push them from the nesting box or would it have left on its owns

and why are they picking on it .

My mother has removed the baby and taken the mother and father and placed them all in the same cage...is this the right thing to do ? Can it feed itself ?

Any help would be grateful as we are both new to having a baby ..

Thanks

At that age it should still be with the mother. Sometimes they explore and find their way out of the nesting box, but it doesn't mean they can feed themselves.

Should we place them all back into the aviary and place the baby back into its nesting box ?

If not fully feathered it should have been put back in its nestbox. They often come out too soon by accident. Too late now. You have removed them all. If you try and put all back chances are the baby wont be cared for as the whole nesting situation hasd been compromised....insecure now. Now you have removed them all you must make sure thye baby is fed.

hi kaz ..thanks for your response ..

its fully feathered...could it be older ?

keep an close eye on the baby, and check its crop regularly, if the mother and father have decided to not feed it, then you need to go to a local pet store and buy some handrearing mixture and a spoon or syringe, and you will then have to feed it for about 2 weeks until it starts to touch the seed

Fully feathered with no gaps missing feathers means it was ready to leave the nestbox. Make sure there is food easy to get to...babies search the floor for food...scatter seed and try some green vegies, grated carrot, sweetcorn and seed sprinkled through. :D
