Posted June 21, 200916 yr I have 3 budgies in a good sized indoor cage. They love the seeding native grass that I pick outside for them, but I'd love to have some naturally growing in their cage for them to browse when they want. Are there any grasses that would grow in a semi-shallow container - I'm thinking those herb style containers. The cage gets sunlight all day so i guess the main issue would be soil. Has anyone done this or can point me in the right direction for information? Thanks
June 21, 200916 yr Dunno. I would be bit worried about them playing in the soil. What about hydroponically? Then there is an issue of the seeds going mouldy or rotting, I suppose
June 21, 200916 yr It wouldnt work as the birds will eat the seeds as soon as they sprout. its best to grow the grass in a pott or a selected part of your garden and give it to them a little at a time. I give my birds pure garden soil (not potting mix). Pure soil has many antioxidants, vitamins and minerals plus good bacteria in it... not to mention natural grit! birds go nuts over a dish of fresh earth taken from under the surface!! June 21, 200916 yr Author Wow really? I though soil was dangerous, i know it can pose a risk to humans but i guess birds can handle it. Do they actually eat the soil?? If i were to buy the soil what type do you recommend? most soil in my garden would have been potting mix at some point.

You need fresh pure soil direct from the ground, either clay or sandy loam is best. Bought stuff could have anything in it. If you dont have access to earth, then dont worry about giving it. Liv... so what if you have say, a standard suburban backyard with grass? Could you dig down a little and use the soil there? Or should you go out bush and get some that is definitely 'untouched' ?? Just wondering Also couldn't any soil have worms in it?
June 21, 200916 yr You would need to know what your grass has been treated with at some point recently. Even dog droppings if a minute part is still attached to the grass will kill a budgie. I have seen it happen within seconds.
