Home after 5 weeks away I find my poor dog "Rum" has fleas. I now must consider if this poses a problem for "Eagle" as he has recently taken to riding "Rum" bare back as the poor 'ol red heeler shuffles around. Is it possible for a budgie to get fleas? "Rum" has just been to the vet and "Frontline" is nuking the fleas as I write. Could "Frontline" after being administered to a dog be harmful to a budgie while riding said dog bare back? Just in case I will disallow this activity which "Eagle" loves but which "Rum" finds disdainful.

As far as I'm aware, birds don't get fleas, but I would be wary of allowing Eagle to ride on Rum for a number of reasons. The obvious one of safety, especially if Rum finds it disdainful. As to the danger of revolution, if you part the fur and apply to his skin, Eagle shouldn't be in danger ingesting it, but disallowing him might be an idea for now...

Yes, Frontline could be dangerous to a budgie, just like they have different ones for cats and dogs there is a reason, I would not let him ride on him until the fleas are gone and you have given him a bath to take any residue off which I believe can be done after 48hrs of application after that it is in the blood system of the dog.

I did a google to see the answer to this and I didn't find anything concrete. It is unlikely they probably would get fleas but there is not guarantee that one won't get on the budgie and bite it since budgies are warm blooded. I would just keep an eye on your bird and if you see anything that isn't right call your avian vet for treatment. From what I read Ivermectin would be the treatment of choice.

as far as i know, budgies dont get flea's, they get mites etc. i wouldnt let the budgie ride on the dog lol. safety reasons due to possibly the dog turning on the budgie (the dog can be as tame as anything and friendly, but instinct can take over) and if you use frontline etc etc to control flea's on the dog, its best to keep the bird away

It is very cold here at the moment. He needs a bath and I think I will use a friends hair drier to ensure he in no way succumbs to a cold [or worse]

Yes Richo, you can use a hair dryer, just put the bird in the cage & let the warm

air blow on him & he will be dry in no time. :)
