Posted June 11, 200915 yr okay we have 2 lovely budgies Lucy and Ollie. I have been training lucy now to the point where she will sit on my shoulder as I walk around the room. But Ollie is my partners budgie she has been training him. She followed what I did with lucy but hes now turning into a biter he bites both me and lisa. Now heres the worrying thing he loves his bell and mirror and yes he licks them i mean the mirror is disgusting with drool. and if lucy goes near either the bell or mirror he goes into sqwuaking mode on her and barges her out the way and then she nips him on the wing. They get on great outside the cage and love the big perch(curtain pole) and the fan blades on the light. Is this normal behaviour for ollie licking the bell and the mirrors?
June 11, 200915 yr Male budgies or any budgies should never have mirrors or reflective toys. They bond to the "other budgie" they see in the refection and not to the owner / trainer. Removing the mirror and bells will be best for the bird. The mirror and bell is the male budgies mate and is seriously interfering with training, bonding, and the emotional state of the budgie. he bites because he is protecting his "mate"...the one he sees in the reflection Edited June 11, 200915 yr by KAZ

Been a long long time since I had budgies that i had forgotten that part. Would it matter to lucy if they were removed?
June 11, 200915 yr Agree 100% with Kaz. You will probably notice they may be annoyed with you because you removed them, but will get over it. The benefits will be well worth it in the long run!
June 11, 200915 yr Author okay have removed all shiny things have also had to cover his feeders as we noticed he danced to them aswell so hopefully he may settle and now he is bouncing from perch to perch I assume looking for the one in the reflection But i think he may either be getting his first malt or he is coming of maturity they both are young birds only 26-32 weeks old I had forgotten how it was when I had them before with my dad
