Posted June 11, 200916 yr I am worming both my budgies at the moment as they are in quarantine. It says on the bottle to leave the mixture in the water for 24 hours. Do you think it's okay if I leave it a little longer than 24 hours or will they be poisoned if they consume more than they would in 24 hours? Just that I wouldn't be surprised if Piccolo is still too afraid to drink as much as usual, or if Cosmo will be spoilt and fussy and refuse to drink something pink. I think they could go without drinking for 24 hours if they decide to and I want to make sure they get it into them, but not at the risk of poisoning them.
June 11, 200916 yr Author okay...... This one is by aristopet and it's called Worm-Enda Plus: Praziquantel bird worming syrup. It's 10mg/mL Levamisole Hydrochloride and 2mg/mL Praziquantel. Directions for use: Administer diluted to drinking water. Dilute by adding 0.5ml (10 drops) to 20mL water. Use this as the sole source of water for 24 hours. Repeat treatment after 14 days. And then it goes on to say stuff like dilute it more in hot weather etc. That all means nothing to me but just in case that helps anyone know whether leaving it in longer than 24 hours is okay.
June 11, 200916 yr I would say you are fine...reason being a lot of budgies will not drink water with meds in and 24 hrs may not cut it. Better wormers are to be found at vets and bird suppliers....most of them are based over 3-5 days which ensures they will work.
June 11, 200916 yr Author Thanks Kaz Maybe I'll give this one to them for two days, and then find a better one to give them in 14 days time for the 3-5 days.
June 11, 200916 yr If you are worried about them not drinking it,take the water away tonight & put it back, the day after tomorrow, or if you have a eye dropper, a couple of drops in through the side of the open beak 7 you then know they have been wormed.

June 11, 200916 yr Just be careful they do not bath in it! I use to use the same stuff and Blue bathed in it and it caused eye irrationation and a trip the vet!
June 11, 200916 yr Author Good tip! Luckily they don't bath in their water. Cosmo is obsessed with baths, but only under running water he sprints down my arm any time I have him on my shoulder and go past a tap.
June 12, 200916 yr My guys all seem to like bathing in their drinking water one of the reasons I switched to Ivermectin and wormout gell directly to the beak
June 12, 200916 yr Author They would have to be stupid to bath in it anyway, the house is absolutely freezing Cosmo does flick a lot when he drinks, so I don't know whether a droplet could get in his eye or something but any type of container wouldn't change that
June 12, 200916 yr Well I will be,drinkers in the cage that the birds can bath in. Not only make a mess in the pen, they s',t in it & who knows what else, they may spread.Because they are all drinking out of it.

I was wondering if there was a certain time in which to use the wormer...does it have to be every 2 weeks till they pass ;( - which could be hopeflly another 15 yrs away, or just for a while like a few months course? i was thinking theyd develop resistance to the med if used over years. Did you end up buying the vet med and how did that go? thx for any help.
