I just messaged a member about it renee. She looks very small for 7 days old. And yeah the ring would fall off at this stage. Not a pet bird either, not from big parents but they are exhibition birds none the less.

Looks like you got yourself a nice little Lutino their mate, Congrats :) look forward to it developing it's feathers.

Are they normal Oat's you would purchase from a pet store?....if so, you should try porridge(oats) as the hen's as well as the babys will enjoy chewing on it...my hens turn the oats into dust oats

and yes, its awfully small for 7 days old, my 8 day old baby looks twice that size :S

I have decided to continue to update the thread. I hope they are clearbody, and I cannot wait to see if freckles is in fact a lutino.

It's nice to see Freckles' siblings! I'm glad you've decided to continue the thread. :o

Me too!!! They are all so cute... Just a question re nesting material. Is there any reason why one has wheat and the other has shavings? I have seen both used and wonder what the advantages/disadvanges were of both. Thanks :D

P.S. I have photos on my computer of one of my clutches, and one of my bubs at 9 days old look much bigger than freckles. Is he getting enough food? Maybe you could give him a daily top up if you're worried. he does look small to me, but the little ones can often turn out okay in the end... he might just be the 'runt' of the nest.

Renee had a chick once that took forever to catch up and grow and maybe she can add some help here. I had one or two as well....they did catch up in the end. Might be the parents recipe for feeding them...not all parents get the crop milk part right.

Look forward to seeing if you do have TCBs in the nestbox too :)

Hi.

The hulled oats are just in the box for the photos. I dont use them as nesting materials. Shavings and seed are the only nesting materials that I use.

Thankyou all for the comments

Usually at 7 days of age my birds are being rung.

He looks like he has a bald back, is his mum plucking his down?

Freckles is the "Runt" of the nest. She is not growing fast at all, very slow infact.

This is not the average size of a 10 day old baby budgie. usually my birds are rung on day 7, but I will not be able to get a ring on freckles for a few more days.

However I'm still going to keep the thread going because we will all see how she turns out in the end

Don't worry too much Pearce. Last year I had a chick that took FOREVER to develop. I think he spent close to 6 weeks in the nest box before fledging. In the end he looked okay, pretty average that is, you'd never know he was such a slowpoke. :)

Aha, I have received queries about this posting so I will elaborate: I rung him a few days short of 3 weeks and then fostered him out to a wonderful cock bird I have that happily raises chicks from 2 weeks+ and then spent the next 3 weeks there. He did not stay in his original nest. :)

Freckles was found dead in the nest box today.

It looks like she was squashed

 Poor Freckles, it was not meant to be.

Sorry to hear that Pearce :)

Remember all dead budgies look squashed...it does not mean they died by being trodden on or sat on...its just how they look when you find them. Freckles obviously had issues to stunted its growth and issues that meant a failure to thrive. Best this way I guess....nature knows best here. Sorry about the sadness I know you would feel at the loss.

Take joy and comfort in the others that are thriving in that nest :D

Hugs Pearce xoxo I believe everything happens for a reson, no matter how hard it seems at the time. Keep your chin up and watch the other bubs you have thrive and grow!

I don't comment on the breeding journals much as this is not my area of expertise but I do read through them, I am very sorry to hear about your loss pearce , hugs, rip.
