Posted June 2, 200915 yr http://birdzone.com.au/shop/index.php?act=...mp;productId=94 Does this look like a good mix to give my budgie who won't eat any of the fresh fruit/vegies I give her?
June 2, 200915 yr Looks good to me, i prefer to use basic budgie seed though, but mine eat all sorts of fruits where as yours dont want to, so a decent blend of different seeds and such should be good
June 2, 200915 yr Author That what i was thinking. If I can get her eating it as part of this then she might get a taste for it and start eating fresh stuff... I think i'll go ahead and buy some. Im also buying some beak appetit 'veggie delight' mix to try and tempt her.
June 2, 200915 yr Perseverence and variety and trying different ways of serving and doing this EVERYDAY will get your bird eating vegies. Edited June 2, 200915 yr by KAZ
June 2, 200915 yr I wouldnt feed that seed but in the end its up to you. I wouldnt do it because Its got alot of those vegetable things in it which could be full of preservatives and all that junk. Its got sunflower seeds in their which I dont feed every day as it makes the birds overweight. I dont need all that junk in the mix because my birds eat their vegetables, all birds can be taught to eat vegetables. As Kaz said keep trying eventually they will take a bite. June 2, 200915 yr good point, buy a bag still just don't give him too much, maybe add a little of it to his original budgie mix and see how he go's,
June 2, 200915 yr In the FAQ under the Food Section there are suggestions and ways on how to start getting your budgies adjusted to eating foods other then seed, seed is helpful in this process because you can sprinkle it on their food and they will start to pick off the seed but also start to get a taste of the other foods, it can take time, it can be frustrating and you will waste food but in the end they will start to eat it, it may take a few months but it is worth it .
June 2, 200915 yr Honestly, if your budgie is picky they just eat around the "good stuff". Some of those seeds are very high in fat - namely sesame, sunflower, safflower and peanuts and I bet they will pick these out and eat them first because they taste the best (think Macca's for humans). Also, I see it has a lot of fruit (apple, banna, papaya, currants) which is probably dried and mostly made of sugar. If you give seed ad lib their diet will become mostly fatty seeds and they will ignore everything else. Why not put your money and effort into teaching them to eat fresh food instead? That way you know it's good, and you can monitor and control how much if it they are eating. The only bird I would give this to would be one I know will try everything new in there, otherwise most of it would go to waste, BUT I would be too concerned about all the fatty seeds. You would have the same problem with your veggies in that they will refuse to eat the new stuff amd some will go to waste. But you would need to move onto veggies anyway, so better off focusing on feeding veggies instead. Edited June 2, 200915 yr by Chrysocome
June 2, 200915 yr Author okay, fair enough. I've been trying different things to get her to eat vegies... Sprouts mised in with her seed, a tray of peas, corn, carrot and sporuts on the floor of her cage, I made a mix with carrot, honey, soaked lentils, celery, barley and mixed a whle bunch of her seed in... And no luck. It's just frustrating when I make something for her and try to get her to eat and then have to throw it all out.

Ummm $17 a kg is very very dear. I don't pay any more than $1.60 a kg for my seed. The last lot of seed I bought, 75kg cost me $112.50 thats $1.50 a kg. The seed was Golden Cob Budgerigar 25kg bags.
June 3, 200915 yr Author Buying in bulk is always cheaper, I don't think I could get it in smaller quantities for that cheap. But yes, $17 is very expensive. I think i'm going to pass on this mix, but i'm still trying to convince my girl to eat her vegies without any luck.
June 3, 200915 yr I'd go to your nearest good produce store where you can buy premixed seed by the kilo. If they have separate seed mix ask them to mix it for you. I used 2kg of Canary, 1 kg of Fench Millet, 1 kg of Jap millet, 1/2 kg Panicun. This should only cost about $10.00 for 4.5 kgs and will be better than what you get else where.
June 3, 200915 yr Author I recently bought 5kg? I think, for $7.50 which wasn't too bad. Seems better quality than the last stuff I got from a different pet store, none of those little black seeds that they don't eat.
June 4, 200915 yr Easiest starter food for a budgie as far as vegies etc go......... Suggestions. Keep a pack of corn kernels in the freezer so you can pull out and defrost just a teasoons worth each day. Add to that a teaspoons worth of grated carrot, wrap the rest and refrigerate. Boil an egg...eat half for yourself and mash the other half for the budgie. Get a small bunch of english spinach or similar dark green leaf vegie and fine slice a little to go in with the mix, sprinkle budgie seed on top and see what happens. Serve it at feeding time ( 7 am-ish ) ...early morning and evening ( around 4 pm-ish ) with no alternate seed in the cage. These are the times they are eating and hungriest. With the seed on top and through the mix they will get some vegies either by mistake or try it because it is there and nothing else is. Eventually they seek it out. My baby budgies head straight for the vegie dish when they first fledge the nest because they have a taste for it from their parents who also fed it to them by crop in the nestbox. It all starts there. good luck. If you keep trying it wont take long. Edited June 4, 200915 yr by KAZ
June 4, 200915 yr Author Thanks for that Kaz, I will try that. How long can I leave it in the cage before it will go bad? Ugh, it gets hard sometimes, We also have 8 dogs and I have two horses to ride. I'm loving having her though.
June 5, 200915 yr Depends what food. Egg I dont leave in their longer than 2 hours but corn on the cob or greens can stay for about 5 hours in my breeding cages.
