Some say splayed legs happen due to the mother sitting too hard on the chicks in the nest. Some say its due to no concave in the nestbox and the chicks legs slip out from under it. More often than not it is due to lack of calcium. AND whoever is breeding their birds should pay closer attention to the chicks in the nestbox as the signs are there early enough for it to be fixed. A search on this forum using the search function and typing in SPLAYED LEGS will bring up a lot of earlier topics including how to fix splayed legs in younger chicks in the nestbox. Once its past 3-4 weeks its too late to fix.

Thanks Kaz i will look this up.

Is it normal with this condition for him to stick his leg side ways in the air?

It varies. Check for malformed bones or breakages as well...what may appear at first to be splayed leg can be deformity or injury.

The poor little guy. Could be a dislocated hip too.

Perhaps a vet visit and an x-ray to see if anything can be done. sometimes these things can be corrected but he is to old to be treated with a splint. A vet may be able to correct it or even amputate the lower part of the leg. Budgies do fine with one and a half legs.

This guy was selling him today at a market and after i asked about him ..he told me i could have him for half price ....bloody cheek ..he still wanted to profit from him ..so now he is sharing my night inside whilst we get use to each other ..

Cant understand how anyone can still want to profit from this ..but even with his disability he seems okay ...bloody cute in fact.

I'm more worried about my other budgies picking on him ...

At times he seems to be able to place his leg under him but is going to sleep with his leg hanging in the breeze...

I see you have now added a photo to your first post that wasnt there before. Cute cute little budgie. I am glad you brought him home with you. Budgies dont often pick on the disabled budgies. I have a few in my aviary and they all get along with the others and vice versa :)
