Posted May 28, 200916 yr I have a Chick that was born on the 24/5 and I believe has splayed legs. I know that I am going to have to splint the legs but not sure if I can leave the chick in the nest box with a splint? If I can't should I leave the bub until it's over a week old before I pull inside to handraise? Just trying to work out the timing as I think he/she is almost to smal to handfeed at the moment so would not mind leaving him in with his mumfor the next week but don't want this to effect the way his legs heal
May 28, 200916 yr I would leave him with his mum, wait a week or so, then splint the legs. Keep the calcium up at the moment through water and/or soft food, but when you put the splint on, leave him in the nest with a splint. If he has the splint on for 2 weeks, he will be fine. Make sure the splint binds the legs but does nto overhand either side very much.
May 28, 200916 yr Author Thanks dave I really was not looking forward to having to handraise a Budgie at the moment. Will do thanks again
May 28, 200916 yr I also would leave him in the nest. BUT I am also wondering how you have worked out he has splayed legs at only 4 days of age ?
May 28, 200916 yr Author I also would leave him in the nest. BUT I am also wondering how you have worked out he has splayed legs at only 4 days of age ? because one sticks upwards. I know that babies normally are very wide legged but this is to an extreme, I lined him up with three others born on the same day and he is not in the norm, I think he got stuck in a odd position in the egg maybe. I have added extra bedding and also put some unfertile eggs in there so that the hen does not sit as tight and will give him another week, if he does not come back into line as the others the same age as him then I will splint and go from there. Thanks
May 29, 200916 yr Calcivet to parents drinker as well...and a drop to his beak daily for 10 days or so if you can manage to get him to take it.
May 29, 200916 yr Author Thanks Kaz, I have been doing that I found that if I dip the eye of a needle into the calvet then I can get that in his mouth and hope he is getting it. looks alot better today, seems to be coming back into alignment so hopefully in a week it might be almost normal and i will not have to splint it. oh and the unfertile egg which i stole from another nest well it argh hatched! Really it had pasted it's use by date but i guess I should have candled it first! Going to leave it in there as she will only have three and frees the other pair up for a short rest and then they can go back down.
