We're Building An Aviary In The North

Featured Replies

I'm planning to build an aviary this summer. Not at our home but on the island we are spending our summers at. My talented father is helping me to plan and to build. Lucky me! Here are some photos from the weekend. The most exciting thing that happened was that I shot two field-mice and that my father fell down from a ladder. Unfortunately I didn't took photos of any of that. But anyhow I hope you will prefer pictures of the bird project. ;)

Evening 1.We found a good place to build on and sawed down some tiny trees to get mot space.

Day 2. The weather wasn't the best but we are not afraid! Here have we the foundation of the house.

215742.jpg

The foundation of the floor and the structure of the house is fixed.

215843.jpg

Day 3. I don't know the word but the boards that are holding the roof are done.

215938.jpg

And the roof

220014.jpg

And some walls. The holes are supposed to be places for windows and a door.

220049.jpg

The east wall is done (yes we will close the hole that the kid is watching us trough) This wall is supposed to be in touch with the aviary.

220147.jpg

The man in the carrot-dress in the evening sun, here is the "roofblanket" (haha made that word myself, I don't know the English verision) 220233.jpg

Day 4. we are nailing the last and then we take our boat and go home.

220309.jpg

And from the other side. Aaaah, nicenice. If everything goes as I have planned the birds will get sea view from the aviary.

Thanks! I hope you can find someone who are good at building too, or maybe you should try to do something on your one, you may learn!

Lovely :D Is the plan to take the birds with you on holidays and put them in the aviary for the summer ?

Thank you and yeah something like that, I'll wait until it is warm enough even in the nights. The plan is that they shall live there for a month or so.

Glad to see that it is coming along. Are these birds inside during your winter - obviously. How will they adapt as they change between the 2 environments?

Thanks, my birds are inside during the winter, but I've got a friend who have budgies who likes to go outside and play in the snow. Of course they can go inside to a warm house whenever they want to. But still; they like the snow. I think my birds can handle it pretty well, they use to live in a friends aviary for a couple of weeks in the summer, and it has never been any problems with that. I'll make sure they have everything they need in their house before they get access to the aviary. I hope it'll go well.

As always I've got a lot of assistance in charge, this time it was my father and my brother-in-law. Lucky me that don't have to build this thing all by myself, I call myself leader, but it means that I say yes or no and then the work is done all by itself :(

The weather was better than the last month of rain!

More boards

The first net is up! We have lifted the whole thing up so we could put the net under it and prevent that animals can get into the aviary.

We are still putting up net

My brave builders are still going strong though the football started on the TV.

211348.jpg

DONE! We will build a "lock" (?) next time

220155.jpg

WOW WOW WOW :(:)

Very cool!!! Your birds will love it. Here is Australia, we recommend having the roof of the aviary covered with clear laserlight (plastic roofing). This is because we have many wild birds that can poo into our avairies. They spread disease and cause illness and death. I'm not sure if you have similar issues, but it might be worth thinking about it...

What are you planning on putting on the ground? I see you mention field mice... if they are anything like our mice here is Aus, they'll burrow under the walls, even the extended pieces you have... If your wire is mice proof, you could lay it on the ground and cover it with something... or you could lay concrete??? Just some thoughts.

You have very talented builders and are an EXCELLENT LEADER!!! :D:D

That is a wonderful job? :( Do you mean, that next time you will build a lock so that you can close a door behind you before opening the one into the budgie area?

Haha, I like your enthusiasm, my builders are great! We have a few predator birds too, but at this time of the year they don't eat budgies. And they've roof over a little bit of the aviary. And yeah it is possible for wild birds to poop in the aviary but I'm not worried about diseases. (As long as nobody shits in their food) I've traps all around the aviary and I got millions of mice! But they don't dig no. I saw one in the aviary once but I killed it. Thanks for the warning anyhow!

Thanks! No not that kind of lock, but a second door so the birds can't escape when you walks in to the aviary.

very nice aviary
