For what reasons would a hen throw a 1 day old egg out of the nest? (not in a colony situation of course) I know there can be a lot of reasons but I'd like a list if someone can do that please?

I've just had that happen to me, and I've had it happen (rarely) before, so I'd like to know why. What I could be doing wrong, mainly.

i have a similar problem, when my hens layed for the first time, they ended up laying 2 then kicking them out of the nest, and a few weeks later they went back to the nest and layed a full clutch and are now sitting them, i think u will find most first time hen's will do this

True. Though the hen that just did this, this is her 4th clutch altogether (2 last year, 2 this year) so what reasons would she have?

Most first time hens will NOT do this. Its rare. Silly immature young hens may, and new mums may but it isnt common practice. Sometimes it turns out to be the Dads that have done it. When I have had issues like this I stop the breeding of that pair and give them a break and try agian further down the track. In my experience its the birds way of saying they dont want to be doing this right now or arent ready.

I agree with Kaz as i have had it twice this year so far and from experience hens so I am guessing they are saying nah not ready yet, one hen through 4 eggs out which I manged to save 2 of them and then she went on to lay 5 more eggs after about a weeks break and all up she has hatched 6 healthy babies, they are the parents of my violets.

Ah okay. With this girl though, she seems to lay the egg too early for her..like she's getting it out of the way so she can further improve her nest..because with her other clutches, 2 of them she threw out the first egg, but laid the rest and raised the resulting chicks fine.

Reasons she might do this though..I know for certain it was her, she doesn't even allow her mate inside the nest..and also, I put the egg back in, came back a little while later and watched her chuck it out of the nest herself.

So really I'm wondering why she did this, and why any other pairs would..(if they did, I want to know reasons so I can fix it if it happens)

Haha yeah that I know..I seriously think she laid it, looked at it a little while, then thought, "What the heck is this doing here? Hah this egg is so not mine...goodbye!" *chucks it out of the nest*

Once she'd done that she was happy, sitting in the nest again and ready to lay her second egg. Here's hoping she doesn't do that again, but so far it's only been the first egg..It is strange.

i has this prob a couple years ago , so i made new nestboxs but a little larger and deeper this fixed the prob as well and the chicks also stays in the boxs for a little long as the mother had to feed then for that extra week i found that i did not loose any chicks as that are thay bit bigger and thay will live better and bigger

its been in my family tradition :rofl: that budgies can taste the yolk, which they like ( i doubt it a little because apparently they have a poor sense of taste) and they wont stop. I had a Lutino you kicked out her eggs, but she didnt really have a partner because she was being a rebel and going with any cock but her second clutch, she has now got four babies and doing a great joob at raising and feeding them

I have a male and a female budgie, they have a nesting box but the female has pushed up to 9 eggs at once out of her nest, prior to this she pushed out two eggs. The male goes into the nesting box from time to time and they stay in the box together, he will come out for a feed and return to the nest. After pushing out the nine eggs she is back in the nest and been sitting but I can’t see her, she is sitting very low in the nest. Is there anything I can do? I wondered whether she is throwing them out because they maybe unfertilized eggs. Can you please help me cos I’m pretty keen to see some babies!!
