May 13, 200915 yr Author Split for recessive pied??? I would say he is recessive pied. That was my guess, but for that to happen the cock has to be split for it, which I didn't know beforehand!!
May 13, 200915 yr Sorry, I don't follow... You asked what we thought about the cock being split to recessive pied and I said I thought he was full, not split. Why do you think the cock is only split? Visually he looks like a recessive pied to me, albeit with some patchy unusual markings.
May 13, 200915 yr The male obviously isn't Recessive pied, he has iris rings. I think what he meant was that the male was split for rec. pied (seeing as the female is Recessive pied), thus making the chick a recessive pied?
May 13, 200915 yr Author white down means opaline doesn't it? That's what I understand. Also, cock is opaline, and the chick is a hen so has to be opaline!
May 13, 200915 yr thats what I thought... Opaline Pied Hen I can never tell recesive or Dom or clearflight... so I'll leave that part for the experts.
May 13, 200915 yr Hmm. Chick is definately an opaline. I think dad is actually a Golden face opaline dominant pied + clearflight pied cobalt. The hen looks to be a golden face recessive pied sky blue. That or an oddly coloured light green (but i doubt it). The chick also is a pied of some sort, i would say it could be a dominant + clearflight pied like its dad. Its definately dominant pied at least. Edited May 13, 200915 yr by Dean_NZ
May 13, 200915 yr Author There's really not a lot of colour (if any) coming through at the moment!! I thought it looked like a recessive pied going by the orange beak.....
May 13, 200915 yr Split for recessive pied??? I would say he is recessive pied. Dad isnt recessive pied. Mum is but dad is dominant pied.
May 21, 200915 yr Author Dad Mum A couple more pics of my one and only chick!! There is quite a lot of blue coming through at the base of her back and on the front, it's just covered up by all the down, maybe sky blue... My guess is that despite how the photo of the mum looks, I'm guessing she is a light green recessive pied, split blue, and the cock is as Dean_NZ says - a golden face opaline dominant pied + clearflight pied cobalt, and the chick has missed out on the golden face part........ I'd be interested to hear anyone elses theories?
May 21, 200915 yr Nice bub. Both parents must be split for blue for a blue bub to come out. Looks nice. does it seem to have any patches at the front?

May 24, 200915 yr sometimes on those kinds of budgies (dad) it is hard to tell even through clear eyes. Mine is!!!
May 25, 200915 yr Author Does anyone have any other thoughts on the baby (and my theory about parents)???
May 25, 200915 yr Author Just been playing with a genetic calculator - I can't get this chick to come up as an option with what I am supposing the parents to be..... Guess we're missing something, or require more test breeds. Just on the test breed issue, if they were to go another round now, do you think they'd be okay in terms of the weather.....I'm in Adelaide....they're outside....or should I put them back in the avairy for a while, until it warms up?

Can you use a breeder cage inside the house ?
