Posted April 2, 200916 yr Hi All, I've decided to let my original 2 budgies have a go at producing a family! Cock - Bah Hen - Uh Oh It seems to have been a fairly popular decision with them so far, I put them in a cabinet on Monday, and Uh Oh was almost straight into the nest box! This morning she seems to be looking decidedly 'egg bumish'! Will keep you all up to date. SJW
April 2, 200916 yr cute pair The cock is YF2 dominant pied opaline ans the hen is YF2 recessive pied. You will get dominant pieds, normals and split recessive pieds. most babies will be YF2 as well. You should get some pretty babies
April 2, 200916 yr Author The names make me giggle - do they have stories attached? The names are what my 1 yr old (at the time) was saying the most!
April 2, 200916 yr I love the names too. They look great. Look forward to seeing all the pics of eggs and chicks Is it possible for a Dom Pied to be split Rec. or can only normals be split... might sound like a dumb question but I never thought about it before... I'm guessing they could be but I'm not sure...

Pairing a dominant pied budgie split recessive pied with a recessive pied budgie or another dominant pied split recessive would work too.

Pairing a dominant pied budgie split recessive pied with a recessive pied budgie or another dominant pied split recessive would work too. I didn't realise it had to be a dominant split recessive to recessive (or dom split recessive) to get DEC's. I gathered from other posts that it had something to do with clearflight pieds??

Its clearflight pied with recessive pied. I really should think for one second before posting What you end up with when crossing dominant pied and recessive pied is a budgie that can in some cases be almost free of markings and might make one think it is a double factor dominant pied. Sounds like it could be very interesting then! Here's hoping we get that far!!
April 7, 200916 yr Author I'm guessing I was mistaken about the egg bum look , as nothing has appeared as yet. Uh Oh is stilll spending a lot of time in the nest box, so I have a couple of questions - How long would you expect it to take before the first egg turns up (assuming an already bonded pair and immediate interest in the nestbox)? and, How can you encourage the hen to come out so that you can check the box? When I come and tap the side of the box, if Uh Oh isn't already in there, she'll dart in and start yelling at me!! :happy-dancing: Thanks, SJW

Tap the side of the box to let her out. If she isnt in there, maybe slide a thin piece of wood or cardboard over the nestbox hole depending on how you have the cage set up.
April 7, 200916 yr Author Tap the side of the box to let her out. If she isnt in there, maybe slide a thin piece of wood or cardboard over the nestbox hole depending on how you have the cage set up. I guess I forgot to say that even if she's in there already and I tap the side, she doesn't come out, but just screams at me..! Do you think the best idea would be to wait until she is out and block the nest box as suggested (assuming I can get to it before she zooms back in!!)? Can I train her to leave the box when I tap? Maybe by gently lifting her and putting her back through the hole into the cage - assuming no eggs have arrived and also that I can do it without having my fingers removed ..?
April 7, 200916 yr New mums always scream at you. Check out the faq topic called Care of baby Budgies in the Nestbox....there are tips written down there on all of this http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...he%20nest%20box Edited April 7, 200916 yr by KAZ
April 14, 200916 yr Author Egg 3 arrived today! If the hen spent the night in the box from the 2nd egg, is this when we start counting incubation times from?
April 14, 200916 yr Egg 3 arrived today! If the hen spent the night in the box from the 2nd egg, is this when we start counting incubation times from? Maybe. They do spend time in the box to lay their eggs too. Only you can judge when she has begun to stay in there all the time.
April 14, 200916 yr Author okay, I have seen her out and about a bit, but she'd always duck back in as soon as she noticed us. It's a little hard to tell what she's doing during the day now that I'm at work! I guess I just need to keep a close eye around 18 days from egg 2...! At what point do people put nesting material in after chicks arrive? I tried with some in before there were eggs, but it all got tidied out!
April 14, 200916 yr As soon as the first chick arrives I put nesting materials in. Otherwise the box gets very dirty and the chick has a higher chance of developing splayed legs. I find after the chick hatches the hen doesnt bother throwing the nesting material out. good luck. I start counting from the 3rd egg. Edited April 14, 200916 yr by Pearce

I find after the chick hatches the hen doesnt bother throwing the nesting material out. good luck. Just had a thought, how do people go about putting nesting materials in? Do you need to move all the eggs before you put it in? Also, I've read a lot on here about the different nest materials people are using, I was thinking of using rolled oats (as they're already in the cupboard :hi: ), but was wondering about the type of kitter litter some people are using.... what brand is it?

Also, I've read a lot on here about the different nest materials people are using, I was thinking of using rolled oats (as they're already in the cupboard :boogie: ), but was wondering about the type of kitter litter some people are using.... what brand is it? She's stopped at 3, all fertile Any answers to my queries above...?
