Posted May 22, 200915 yr I'm thinking about putting my Light Green Dominant Pied cock down to breed with two different hens and was wondering how long I should give him a break for after the 1st nest before breeding him with the second hen? Edited May 22, 200915 yr by KAZ
May 22, 200915 yr Nice budgie. its best to breed them seperately, because breeding takes time and patience. The hen from the first nests will probably become stressed and give up on her eggs. Sometimes they may breed like that, but it isnt prferable :hap:
May 22, 200915 yr I disagree with the previous advice. Use a breeding cage setup with sliding door between two cabinets. Let him spend half a day with the first hen and half a day with the next hen......back and forth. Sliding door between saves stress from catching and shifting him. Edited May 22, 200915 yr by KAZ
May 22, 200915 yr Kaz, has that worked for you previously? I have a setup with three horizontal cabinets with two sliders between....I can run one cock between three hens if I want. I have only run one cock between two hens previously.
May 22, 200915 yr I might try that, if the need arises. i have a double with divider that slides. thats really awesome thanks
May 22, 200915 yr Gorgeous bird Linda - I really love light green pieds, the colour seems even more vibrant.

My perferred method of running a cock over 2 hens is pair him up to the first hen and wait until she has laid the 4th egg and then move him to the 2nd hen. There are many ways of doing it.

I should have mentioned that I delay the move between cages to do it just as you do Heath.....exactly the same as a matter of fact....then half a day between cages. Edited May 22, 200915 yr by KAZ
May 22, 200915 yr Kaz's idea should work perfectly fine, and like kaz said, early signs of scaly face, which can be treated with a treatment from a pet shop or a vet
May 22, 200915 yr Author I was actually thinking of breeding him to one hen letting them raise the babies and after the chicks had fledged and were independent putting him with another hen after a rest. Wasn't considering putting him with two hens at once. That photo is about a month old and he doesn't have scaley face, I'll take another closer look at him tomorrow and treat him if he still looks the same. I think adding opaline to the light green dominant pied really seems to add to the vibrancy of the green. Edited May 22, 200915 yr by Linda_S

May 22, 200915 yr Author So how long should I rest him after he's raised a batch of chicks with one hen before I put him with another? From the above posts I'm thinking maybe no rest required?
May 22, 200915 yr So how long should I rest him after he's raised a batch of chicks with one hen before I put him with another? From the above posts I'm thinking maybe no rest required? Since budgies can do two rounds usually without issues...he should be fine.
May 22, 200915 yr Author Thanks, he's one of my best birds so I'd like to share him around a little. Thinking about the hen in this thread for his 2nd http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....mp;#entry308597 Shown here Or this one Which one do you think would make a better 2nd pairing for him? May 22, 200915 yr And I have a chance of getting blue dominant pieds (if he's split blue). Yes and if not chicks will be split blue.
May 22, 200915 yr in my opinion I would go with the blue hen. Blue babies are possible if the cock is split blue. Edited May 22, 200915 yr by Pearce
May 22, 200915 yr Author I was leaning towards her lately over the grey green, I thought the grey green at 1st because she's more solid. I didn't breed the cock so I don't know if he's split blue or not but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed Edited May 22, 200915 yr by Linda_S
