Posted May 14, 200915 yr ] Hi All, hope I'm on right forum for this. "Hulk" here has finished moulting, I think, we are left with these ruffled feathers on his chest, one wing feather as well seems to be twisted. He is one of my pet shop birds. Does this look like a genetic problem? If so would he pass this to any offspring he has? He's a big bossy bird but I haven't a hen old enough to breed with him yet and wondered if this would be a problem. I checked for mites etc. but he's clear in that regard. with thanks Robyn
May 14, 200915 yr I have had birds get feathers like that. its normally related to stress and the feathers will correct over time when the stress is gone.
May 14, 200915 yr Author I have had birds get feathers like that. its normally related to stress and the feathers will correct over time when the stress is gone. Thanks Liv, you maybe right, because I had to quarantine him with 2 other birds(my original 3). We have 6 new birds and redid aviary to see if there was a problem with it, as I lost 3 within 2mths so put new birds into aviary first, all seems o.k. So to-day have returned original 3 as well. Fingers crossed.thanks again Robyn
May 14, 200915 yr The old 'chest crest'. I posted a picture of a pet shop bird with almost the same patterning on its chest. Tracked down the breeder who said its common fault among show budgies as far as she knows, and she has seen a few of them in her own aviary over the years.

Hi Dean, thanks for your reply, prior to his moult he looked fine only since new lot came in they changed. Still wondering if it could be genetic and if could be passed on. thanks Robyn
May 14, 200915 yr That was my question too, i was hoping to breed chest crested budgies but i sorta gave up on the idea. The buzz past I never did find out if it is genetic or stress or feather fault or what
May 14, 200915 yr I have 2 like that one fixed itself when it moulted but the other did a breeder told me it is a good sign for a bird with plenty of feather Oh well we will see.

Thanks splat, at least I know it's not a unique problem. Checked him in aviary this morning, doesn't seem so pronounced as they were so time will tell I quess. Robyn
May 16, 200915 yr Author Hi, an update on the funny feathers. Hulk has been back in Aviary for a couple of days now and feathers have settled down to normal plumage. Just checked him and when he's chattering away or gets a bit excited you can still see them slightly, SO maybe it was stress after all Liv. Robyn
May 19, 200915 yr Author Hi all, just an update on "Hulk"s funny feathers, after a few days in Aviary his plumage settled down from crest on his chest to this. So I'd say stress had a hand in it as Liv. suggested. in earlier post. Third picture, also ruffled but caught him at wrong time with camera, has bonded with a Normal sky-blue hen wondered what off-spring may be, if paired? Different bird to "Hulk". Not named as yet. thanks Robyn
May 20, 200915 yr Have had varying birds with these feathers and seen many others. It does seem to be from stress or sometimes feathers not returning to normal to position after handling. Most resolve normally. I have never had a bird with this where the feathers did not return to normal after a time. Bottom is a clearwing dark green. It could be split blue and/or slpit dilute. okay if it's straight clearwing dk green - paired to a normal blue you would get: 100% normal greens, split blue, split clearwing. If it's split blue you could get: 50% chance normal green, split for blue, split for clearwing; 50% blue split for clearwing. If it's split for blue AND dilute you could get: 50% chance normals split for clearwing. 50% chance normals split for dilute. which have 50% chance being green split for blue and 50% blue. Thank's for the reply nubbly, clear as mud but I did ask. I'll take punt and hope for the 100% normal green. etc. I guess I'll work out variety's down the track, way.... down, thanks for help. Robyn
