Posted May 13, 200915 yr I got a new Budgie on Sunday. She's a baby, around 6-8 weeks. The thing is, she just doesn't seem very happy... She spends most of her time sitting in the one spot, sometimes preening. She has toys in her cage but doesn't play with them. I tried putting some millet in her seed bowl but she didn;t touch it, so I hung a whole branch (?) of it from the roof near her favourite perch. She ignores it. I've been giving her fresh vegies, but she doesn't eat them though that may be because she was a pet shop bird and only got seed. I put some newspaper on the side of her cage for her to shred, and she hadn't touched it until this morning, when she had a few bites at it. Her taming is going well... When I let her out she flies around the room a few times then settles soemwhere and stays there until I put her back... She is eating her seed, she doesn't look sick... Any advice? Could she just still be settling in?
May 13, 200915 yr Please post a picture of her. Is she the age do you think that she was actually sold to you at ? Or would she be an unweaned baby ? Has she a poopy bottom ? Is she thin ?
May 14, 200915 yr Author Here are some pics. She is sometimes quite fluffed up, I thought she might be getting cold as my room is a bit of a cold room... I have now put a towel on two sides of her cage to try and keep her warmer. She doesn't have a poopy botom from what i can see, and her dropping look pretty normal from what i've read. She doesn't seem to be thin, but she is my first bird so I may just not notice... I also don't know about the age, could you tell from the pics?
May 14, 200915 yr I would say she is just young. It's a big adjustment going from a nest to a cage in a petshop to a single bird house. You have to remember that when the birds are making noise it is safe when they go quiet it is because something big and scarey is going to eat them. She might be having issues with the fact that she can't hear her 'flock' and this will take her time to adjust. You might find that leaving a radio on softly during the day might make her feel more comfortable.
May 14, 200915 yr Author Yay :] I guess she is still settling in then, or maybe she just isn't a very playful budgie...
May 14, 200915 yr She will just be settling in, once she is comfortable she will come out of her shell. I leave the radio on for my budgies too.
May 14, 200915 yr I agree your hen is looking fine. she is a lovely spangle too - my favorites My budgies have the radio on 24 hrs a day too no wonder your birds have such high fertility... they are listening to the Dr Feel Good Show late at night! Edited May 14, 200915 yr by **Liv**
May 14, 200915 yr Author Thanks guys! I have been leaving the TV on for her during the day :] She seems to like the Bold and the Beautiful... lol!
May 14, 200915 yr Author I change the channel most nights for her :] Just a question... What's the normal age for a Budgie to be weaned? I got the impression from the pet shop lady that the Budgies they had including Minx arrived when they were 4 weeks. Reading here makes me think that would have been too young...
May 14, 200915 yr If she is cracking seed and eating it she is weaned Edited May 14, 200915 yr by nubbly5
