I'm just wondering..I've heard of people who breed show budgies, who get, say, 3 hens and one male. And breed them together by putting the male in one cage for a day, then the next cage for another day, then the next, etc. I'm wondering:

How well that would work with pet type budgies?

Why/why not to do it with pet types?

What schedule to do, ie, how many hours/days with each hen for it to work?

When to remove the male and put him with one female permenantly? (ie, when all eggs are laid, when the first hatches, what?)

 

I'm not necessarily going to do it, I just never have so I want to learn about it. I know they do it to get more chicks by the male..but what about in my situation, where there are two girls who want to breed and only two mature males..one of whom is related to the first and the second doesn't like him, so there's only the second male. Would that be a good reason to do it?

Anyway, I'd appreciate answers to all my many questions lol. Thanks.

I myself (my opinion) do not believe in 1 male to multiple hen's, due to the fact that the male is not always their too look after his other mate's, and they will not properly be mated to the others, if its colony breeding it may be a different story, but if he's in the cage with the laying hen for 1 day then the other hen's are neglected, they will get frustrated with it....i would suggest 1 male per pair, and not the 1 male to the 3 hens...

In such situations its usually done with one of if not the best cock the breeder has. Its done to quickly establish a line/family/look and create related birds from which you can then line breed. In such cases, the breeder usually has pairs who are infertile or otherwise set up to foster in eggs, or some other means of looking after the resulting chicks.

 

I dont personally see any benefit at all for doing it with pet budgies, or even budgies of medium to high quality. As i said, i've only really heard of it being done for a foundation or stud cock, or a super breeding cock with great features that you want to pass on.
