Posted April 9, 200520 yr hay, i want to get a larger cage for skittle, but the prices and very expensive. i think i will be able to build one bigger for a cheeper price (with the assistance of my dad (Laughing out loud)) can you use chicken wire?? if not what else can i use. i am going to use timber for the initail structure. any ideas? thanks ATD
April 11, 200520 yr Sky just be careful with the chicken wire. Sometimes the galvanising process leaves an excess of zinc on the wire. Parrots (budgies being a parrot) can chew the wire and end up with heavy metal deposits which will kill them. Pretty pain full way of dying. If you use gal mesh of any type, it is best to wash it down with vinagure. Which is a dilute acid. Also make sure that there is no dags of zinc hanging on the wire that the bird can break off and digest. Hope this helps. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> white or malt vinger? and how long for? thanks ATD
April 12, 200520 yr thanks i think i will look into it a little more. i just think skittle needs space to fly when im at college. thanks agen ATD
April 14, 200520 yr I would agree with Hath on this one. get the wire mesh made specially for aviary. I wouldn't use anything to make a bird cage unless I know it's specifically made for bird aviary. Not sure what it's like in the UK, but here in Australia, you can usually get the aviary wire stuff from the same place that you can get chicken wire from (or at least in the bigger hardware store). I hope this help. Good luck with your construction project.
April 14, 200520 yr But I think the Birds are worth it :parrot: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So do I... Keep us posted on your progress!
April 16, 200520 yr See my avatar for the corner of my 4ft h x 4ft w x 2 ft deep cage made out of ?" welded, galvanised mesh. The welded mesh is a LOT less likely to have spikes than traditional twisted chicken wire. While building it you will find any spikes! Good wash over with mild acid wash (vinegar as noted works fine) and a GOOD rinse with lots of fresh water. US$25 in materials and half a day of skin piercing fun!
