June 6, 200916 yr Author Have had another absolute surprise in Omelette's nestbox. One of the grey spangles isnt a spangle at all. Just noticed we have a blue-ish greywing or dilute in the nestbox !
June 6, 200916 yr Interesting. They are definitely grey aren't they?!?!? At first when you told me I was thinking that maybe he/she was a grey opaline spangle, with the grey of the body colour bleeding through to the wing pattern, yet this little one does not look opaline to me. I look forward to seeing him/her, *** all of them, when they have feathered up more. I know you have purchased dearer birds, but Omelette is the best bird you have ever owned.

June 7, 200916 yr Isn't dilute recessive? Doesn't this mean you have to have to get the dilute gene from each parent to have a dilute youngster? What is the difference between a greywing and a dilute? Do greywings not dilute the body colour? How can you tell this is a dilute and not a greywing?

What is the difference between a greywing and a dilute? Do greywings not dilute the body colour? How can you tell this is a dilute and not a greywing? Greywings are meant to have full body colour. Since dilute is a part of this chicks heritage and dilutes are popping out all over the place at Omelette's breeders aviary, I am assuming dilute. Also noted the tail is NOT grey.

June 7, 200916 yr WOW!! I nearly fell over backwards when i got your sms! I cant believe all the things she is poping out with this boy. he must be her match made in heaven. I love watching her babies grow!!!!!
June 7, 200916 yr Author Omelette's youngest and sixth chick which was being fostered in another nestbox, I discovered had a broken neck. It was alive and being fed but could not hold its own head up. The head was totally turned upside down. I had to euthenase it BIG MISTAKE !!! The chick I had to euthenase turned out to belong to the foster parents Omelettes chick is still fine and in another foster nest
June 7, 200916 yr That is a big mistake there Kaz - Any chick lost is a tragedy, but it is good to see that another one of Omelette's is okay.

June 8, 200916 yr What is the difference between a greywing and a dilute? Do greywings not dilute the body colour? How can you tell this is a dilute and not a greywing? That's right, Greywings do no dilute the body colour and their wing markings should be darker. Its clearwings that have full body colour. Greywings DO dilute body colour up to 50%. Full body colour clearwings are a composite of one grewying and one clearwing gene, getting the wing markings from greywing and the fuller body colour from the clearwing gene. Both are dominant to dilute which dilutes both wings and body colour (everything).
