Posted May 8, 200916 yr My good hen Omelette is breeding again......so far nine eggs and all looking fertile. Her other half STUD is in the aviary as he was moulting hard so I paired her up with a grey green gary Armstrong spangle ( the spangle who fathered my grey spangle boy who won best UBC in show ). As there are 9 eggs already, last one laid last night/early this morning, I am not sure she is finished laying...she generally lays 12 to 13 eggs......but some should be due to start hatching soon....early next week. Here is Omelette............... will post photos of the boy she is currently with....later. Edited September 23, 200915 yr by KAZ

May 8, 200916 yr Author Very nice- either way the babies are sure to have mullets looking at the parents Yeah. Hoping the spangle will add some length to the offspring too.

May 12, 200916 yr Author how did you know the 9 egg's were fertile? i wanna candle them but i dont wanna touch nor disturb the hen into getting out of the box so i can candle them....any suggestions? I candled them with a flexible torch. Tap on the box so she gets out and put the torch into the nestbox and see what it shows WITHOUT touching the eggs. A matter of a few seconds...not much of a disturbance.

May 12, 200916 yr Author Kaz how many eggs are you going to foster this time? has she laid anymore eggs? I think she has stopped at nine this time I wont foster eggs....last two times due to bad foster parents we lost quite a few potential chicks. If I have to foster it will be chicks I foster.
May 13, 200916 yr She doesn't have much time to catch her breath does she... she just finishes laying and then she has to start feeding little chicks. 9 chicks laid 2 days apart... say she doesn't incubate till the third egg, thats a 6 day break or something... poor thing... (maths not my strong point so I could be way out...)

(maths not my strong point so I could be way out...) This hen is very unusual JB....dont go feeling sorry for her. She has proven she is happiest when in the nestbox with eggs and babies. When I tried giving her a holiday in the aviary she went into depression and decline. I very nearly lost her ....she would not eat anfd she sulked. I ended up putting her in a breeding cage with no nestbox with her partner for a little while just to bring her back. She is a hen who prefers to be breeding and she does not like the stresses of the aviary.
May 13, 200916 yr I know that you wouldn't put her health at risk, just saying she doesn't give herself much recovery time from laying to feeding
