Posted May 7, 200916 yr does anyone know if olive oil makes a budgie lose his feathers were the olive oil was applied?
May 7, 200916 yr It helps with scaly face. Olive oil blocks the burrows of the mites and suffocates them. Their are no feathers on the cere or feet so I do not see how the bird would lose feathers
May 7, 200916 yr Well, it should'nt effect it, as many people use it for scaly face, just be careful when applying to the face...he might ingest it into his system

Shouldnt be if being used for scaly face and on cere and feet.....not enough info given.
May 7, 200916 yr Aslong as its applied to the cere and feet, and no where else. The bird will not lose feathers. Do your birds have scaly face?
May 7, 200916 yr I mix detol with medicated Olive oil for After the cock's fight.. Â I use Baby oil for Scalely face but haven't needed that for a couple of years.

What makes you think olive oil makes birds lose feathers Pearce ? Hi peeps need to give more info instead of posting this quickly and logging off and not giving enough info for us to be able to advise properly. Read my first post Pearce....I asked the same question and HiPeeps logged off. Until we have more to go on, why speculate ?? well...their's really no other reason to put olive oil on a budgerigar unless its used for scaly face, so thats my theory, and yes your right, not enough info supplied so we cannot speculate on what hes using it for
May 7, 200916 yr Olive oil is a soother. Mixed with Detol it helps with injuries  I agree, no good for Scaley Face but good if there is a scrape between birds.  Also good for chicks that are getting feather plucked. The hens don't like the taste.
May 8, 200916 yr Author sorry guys  yes my budgie had scaly face and thats why i used olive oil on the second day i was applying it i think i put a bit to much on and it dribbled down the side and i figured it couldnt hurt the budgie  a couple of days later i noticed that there were some feathers missing to the left of the cere and i figured that it was the mites progressing and i put some olive oil on it and he seems top of lost more feathers  so before i put more on him to cure something he doesnt have i was wondering if it caused feather loss
May 8, 200916 yr I haven't heard that it does but if he's losing feathers I'd probably stop using it and use another treatment...
May 8, 200916 yr If he is losing feathers you should stop using the olive oil. Can you get ivermectin spot on 0.1%? Vets have it. Â Also you can try vaseline instead of olive oil.
May 8, 200916 yr I'm an aromatherapist and olive oil will deffinatly not cause the feathers to fall out! obviously it's something else. You shouldn't be using baby oil because it's petrole based and will just clog and not alow the skin to breath. Try using a more natural base such as plant derived oils (grape seed etc that will absorb but not clog!
May 8, 200916 yr Its entirely possible this bird has mites other than the scaly face variety causing itching and aggressively scratching at its feathers.
