Posted April 8, 200520 yr Please can you help? My budgie (named Splay) is serverly disabled as it has splay legs that the vet couldn't fix. She can fly (although she tends to crash land alot), Eat and Climb. Although i would like to note that she has a very good quality of life and i happier out of the cage!!! I noticed today that either the mum or dad has pecked her and she has a gash on her cere but my partner has just noticed that she also has a very small amount of blood coming from her nostril. Can anyone advised me on what to do? and if i should remover her from the cage if the parents are becomming agressive? Thank you Eve
April 8, 200520 yr They might be picking on her because of her "disability" so to speak. Yes, I would definitely give her her own cage if they're picking on her. I'm not sure how old she is now but if she's eating and drinking on her own really well I'd definitely get her her own cage. That might also give you a chance to make her more comfortable. In her own cage you can arrange it just for her with something soft on the bottom (to break her falls) and food and water at easy levels to reach.
April 8, 200520 yr oh dear, i just read your other post and i have just come across this one! i would keep splay separated from the others. budgies can become very aggresive and pick on weaker members of the group one of mine has a little bump on his cere at the moment and it hasnt bled at all, i dont think there is any way to stop the bleeding if it is coming from inside the nostril without obstructing the birds airways. i would suggest that you keep her warm and monitor her - if needs be then i think you should phone an emergency vet and ask for some advice.
April 8, 200520 yr *sigh* As if things wern't bad enough for this budgie, now that it's parents have turned on it, I hope things get better later on in life.
April 9, 200520 yr Poor little splay. Having a rough time isn't she! If she's weaned then you should put her in her own cage. That should keep her comfortable and give her a bit of a break from getting picked on.
April 9, 200520 yr Well if the bird is six weeks old and out of its breeding box its normal for the mother to push the bird away and make if feed on its own It just Mother Nature doing her thing If the bird is feeding on its own then by all means put the bird in a separate cage Well I hope this helps and have a nice day
April 10, 200520 yr Thank you all once again for your help. The bleeding has stopped (maybe i was panicing?). We have been out today looking for a new cage. Splay loves to sleep in corners so over the next week we will be adapting the cage for her (although my partner says she is a he?) Once the cage is finished i will post a picture. Splay is currently wanting to be held alot and at this moment tying to climb up my leg!!! I may have to put some climbing frams in the cage for her/him!!! Thank you again from Eve and Splay

April 11, 200520 yr When I was a bit younger I bred quite a number of budgies and qual. I had one young budgie that was hatched with 0ne full wing and one half wing. It also had no feet only two stumps. I was told to humainly kill it, but couldn't. We put ramps in the aviary for it to climb up at night. It lived very happily on the floor with the qual. It didn't know if it was aBudgie or Qual or What <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Crikey that?s a beautiful story it nearly brings me to tears I just love how we humans look out for the pets and blow the **** out of each other :(Laughing out loud):
