Taking A Bird From Inside To Outside...

Featured Replies

Well as you all know I recently picked up X from MB's place. Now the whole time he was there he was inside and now he is fixing to become an outside bird so... my questions are these:

Would it be wise to put him outside during the day and at night put him in the Garage away from the cold air and gradually increase the amount of time he stays outside?

Will a blanket be warm enough to put over during a Melbourne winter?

Is there anything I can do to make the transition easier on the bird?

Am I being an old softie who needs to toughen up and let the bird just get on with getting over being an outside bird?

Most of us keep our budgie babies in a kindie cage until their first moult before going outside. Any reason why he cant stay inside in a flight cage ?

Well the wife would REALLY not be happy with a bird in the house but I could have it in the garage, nothing in there at the moment except some furniture... there are no car exhaust fumes and the like so that might be the best idea... I was just wondering about getting enough daylight and stuff. Thanks KAZ :mallet:

My birds are in a shed so I do not know if thats classed as inside or out. Protected from rain and frost but not from heat or cold.

They acclimatize to it I guess.

On really cold nights use a towel or sheet and cover the cage, it does work. Stops any cold breezes from getting in. Their is no problem with a bird being outside, they get to see more and chat to other wildlife. Day light is a good idea and being inside he will not get any. He will however get artificial light.

The garage sounds fine...any daylight time outside you will need to watch him as there has been a lot of attacks on birds in cages outside lately.

I think I might go to bunnings and go for a bit of a shop... I've got some spare cage fronts... a brand new cage for a brand new bird...
