Posted April 29, 200916 yr Hi. I have an 07 male pied. He is fluffed up. I have since moved him to the hospital cage. He has no dirty vent, no liquid seeping from eyes or nose. He eats seed and drinks water on his own. He seems out of energy and ddoesnt run around anymore. Usually he would be flying away from me in a second but now, as you can see, he lets me handle him. Somthing is not right and Im hoping someone may have some idea. It could be coccoidosis so Im going to see if I can buy coccivet. I have not had a adult bird die in about 6 months so I'm not sure. I realise you cannot diagnose the problem from where you are sitting but any advice would be appreciated. Currently he is drinking calcivet and I appled 1 drop to his beak. Pictures will follow. Here is the bird/ Edited April 29, 200916 yr by Pearce
April 29, 200916 yr Why do you think coccidiosis ? Usually after water has found its way into your aviary you will see many sick birds if its coccidiosis not just one bird. Has he been wormed ?
April 29, 200916 yr Author yes hes been treated with ivermectin. I thought coccidosis because he has many symtoms. He sits on the floor picking at seed, he is weak and lethargic. What else could it be?
April 29, 200916 yr When a bird gets so sick it will let you handle it, i am afraid its near death :laughter: Without knowing what is causing the sickness there is not a lot you can do in reality. The calcium is good. Lots of heat... make the hosipital cage temp rise to about 40oC How is the birds weight??
April 29, 200916 yr Author 44 grams. Do worms have symptoms like this? I thought it just made the bird really itchy. Edited April 29, 200916 yr by Pearce
April 29, 200916 yr worms could be possible... but i wouldn't worm a bird looking so sick... unless you know 100% its worms. Do you have a microscope? 44 grams means nothing to me as each birds recommended weight is different... how does the bird feeeel... light, normal or heavy?? Edited April 29, 200916 yr by **Liv**
April 29, 200916 yr Author normal. he was wormed before he was sick... Edited April 29, 200916 yr by Pearce
April 29, 200916 yr When I was at the avian vet a couple of weeks ago he told me he has no faith in ivermectin for worming birds. He said to use Vetafarm wormout gel, directly administered to the beak. Your budgie needs a crop feed NOW.
April 29, 200916 yr Mega. Don't give Coccivet unless you know it's Cocci.I would place in a hospital cage, Give a dose of Calcivet to the beak and ring a vet. Mega. Don't give Coccivet unless you know it's Cocci.I would place in a hospital cage, Give a dose of Calcivet to the beak and ring a vet. Also start Crop feed as Kaz Surgested.
April 30, 200916 yr So sorry Pearce... I'd get the body checked out... so what ever it is doesn't spread to your other birds.
April 30, 200916 yr Next time it happens Pearce send the droppings to the vet if you can't get their, if I get a sick bird I collect the droppings put in plastic, like glad wrap or freezer bag or sandwich bag then I wrap in foil a couple of layers then stick down the bottom of the fridge if I can't mail it that day but normally I would mail straight away, because my vet is only 45 mins away he gets it the next day and rings me immediatley with the results and if I need medication he will post that off to me too. It's really handy because i then have to the end of the month to pay the bill .
April 30, 200916 yr I think it's great to Liv. He does the same thing for Greg too. I think it's good because when Greg send his dropping in from his birds and gets medication most time I can use it for the budgies so it saves me heaps of money. Doug the vet would say Greg got Trimadine so you can use that too and gives me the dose for budgies
April 30, 200916 yr If a bird is sick & dies,The chances are that it has been sick for days,They don't just fall off the perch over night.
April 30, 200916 yr Haveing read your other post & as I said, he may of eaten the tape or branch, you will need to work out what caused the death,so it dosent happen again,These are the things ou have to do,when dealing with animals. hey can't tell you, what happened.
