Posted April 28, 200916 yr I have been reading here that many of your budgies love beetroot. I am keen to try anything new on my birds but I can also see that the beetroot will make them very messy! My birds are still learning to like a bath, we have small daily lessons only when its warm enough but they wouldn't be able to clean themselves off fully just yet. Is there anything I could do to get the beetroot stain off of them? Is there a correct way of cleaning a bird? Obviously soap is out of the question!
April 28, 200916 yr just put a tub of water at the bottom full of lukewarm water. NO SOAP,LISTERINE ETC. some people use listerine and that is soooooooooo wrong. the water should be a bit more than an inch. good luck
April 28, 200916 yr Author Wow, some people actually put listerine in?! That's crazy, it's full of alcohol! I'm new to bird owning and I know enough never to do that. Thanks for your good advice! Edited April 28, 200916 yr by featherybird
April 28, 200916 yr If you put a bath in make sure it isnt in for long as it will get messy and they will drink from it. Another way for budgies to bath is by putting wet greens in and they roll all around through it. Beetroot does not go away by normal bathing methods....you just have to wait it out for beetroot stains to disappear
April 28, 200916 yr I've never tried it on them. Anyone got any photos of beetroot stained budgies? Use the search function on here and you will see beetroot topics and photos come up
April 28, 200916 yr Will do. This should be funny .On the bath subject, is there any way you can bathe them besides providing water? I have about 6 budgies which need a proper wash. They were given to me not long ago and for some reason absolutely stink. It's like a dirty unwashed smell, it's just wrong. Like nothing I've ever smelt on a bird. They've been wormed and sprayed for mites/lice etc and are quarantined, but I've got not no idea what's causing it. Any ideas? Rahahaha just found Dave's beetroot budgie pictures from last year . I have filled a small dish with warm water regularly and either placed them in it slowly or just let them walk through it as they wish. Chicken is much better with water than Effie, who hops right out! I do spray her every second day. I guess more of this might eventually work. As for the beetroot stains- we will obviously have some messy birds for a couple of weeks!! Thanks for the advice
April 28, 200916 yr Budgies dont need regular baths, they dont get real dirty and they have special oils they put though their feathers to repel dirt and water. I give mine a bunch of wet greens as food, and the ones that want a bath go nuts for it - its their favorite method of bathing.

I had been worried about giving them baths in the cold Canberra winter so if they don't need it too regularly I will occassionaly give them a spray and maybe on warmer days the odd bath in a dish. I had heard the greens tip and am keen to try that too!
