Posted April 27, 200916 yr hi there, yesterday when we came home from holiday one of my budgies 2-3 wk old baby was out of the nest lying on the ground,at first i thought it was dead,it has been pecked at its head and back it was all bloody. i left it in the nestbox all night with its mum but is not getting fed. the blood is all dried up but its head is lumpy and one of its eyes is closed, it is alert but has no crop what can i do?
April 27, 200916 yr You should not have put it back in the nestbox it was attacked in and not fed. You need to get it to someone who can either foster it to another nest or someone who can feed it and assess its injuries.
April 27, 200916 yr I am with Kaz. It should not be back in the same nestbox from which it was attacked and ejected. Do you have any other breeding pairs? Just another questions, who was looking after your birds when you were on holidays? Did this happen before? DId you ask them?
April 27, 200916 yr Author hi, no one was looking after them on holiday because we were only gone for a night the budgie that attacked it is now in a cage so cannot harm it anymore, also there is no one that i know of that can look after it and handrear it because where i livge there arnt many budgie people that can help
April 27, 200916 yr hi,no one was looking after them on holiday because we were only gone for a night the budgie that attacked it is now in a cage so cannot harm it anymore, also there is no one that i know of that can look after it and handrear it because where i livge there arnt many budgie people that can help If it has no food in its crop as you said, and it is injured....and you are not feeding it, nor are you doing anything to save it............then its going to die. Simple. So, get active and find a way to feed it ( with expereince ) or give it to someone who can. We cannot perform miracles over the internet, especially if you are NOT going to act quickly in an emergency situation
April 27, 200916 yr Author i have just tried feeding it with a spoon and handrearing and condition formula it has eaten and its crop is starting to form how big does the crop have to be to be full. and how hot/warm does the food have to be, what sort of thermometer do i use?
April 27, 200916 yr Remove it from the nest. Either put it in a foster nest or you need to put it in some kind of warm brooder. And find someone to hand feed it if you cannot do it yourself. Its life is in your hands.
April 27, 200916 yr I was told the other day it should be in the 40's (Celcius) hot to touch if you dip your finger in it... I am no expert though, just going on what the vet said...
April 27, 200916 yr I dont know how hot the water needs to be but feed the baby until the crop is full. I will try find a picture. You need to feed it a few times each day and make sure it stays warm. Is it bleeding? does it have any cuts?
April 27, 200916 yr Author it is not bleeding anymore the bloood is all dried up, do i have to feed it with its head up in the air
April 27, 200916 yr Im not too sure. Young babies are fed on their back but when they get older they arent. I've never had to hand rear a baby before. I would just let him sit on your hand and put the spoon infront of him.
April 27, 200916 yr poor little bub... I'll let the experts help you out but make sure you keep it in a nice warm environment.
April 27, 200916 yr Well it looks like youve done the job feeding it.. poor little bub! i feed my formula at 40 degrees celcius. but i have read on here that some people feed it at 35 degrees. you will need to keep the baby warm either by using a brooder or heat pad or a basking light. it looks quite alert from the photos. You will need to feed this bub around the clock, day and night it will be a fair bit of work! i dont rear my bubs from this young generally (although ive done day one baby cockatoos) So someone im sure will be able to offer better advice than me:)
April 27, 200916 yr Hi Brittanya932, looks like the little guy is a fighter! I hope all goes well, keep us informed.
April 28, 200916 yr The bub looks pretty strong so you must have caught it in time. Make sure the crop is completely empty before you feed again otherwise the chick will get sour crop and die. Make sure the formular is not too hot otherwise the chick will get crop burn and die. 35 Degrees Celsius is the feeding temperature. The chick looks like its been plucked as its missing down feathers and possibly the regular feather too. I am not highly experienced with hand rearing, but with the bit i have done it is vital to make sure the crop is completely empty before feeding and you don't burn it with over heated food. Oh, and make sure the food is fresh every feed and only use clean utensils. I really hope she makes it (she looks like a hen in that picture) Edited April 28, 200916 yr by **Liv**
April 28, 200916 yr Brittany...you are still in school right ? Who is caring for this baby while you are at school ?
April 28, 200916 yr heres one its not very good though, Hope she pulls through. Could then be an early contender for "Budgie of the Month"
July 28, 200915 yr Author HI there, i havent been on here for a while, the baby budgie which i called fighter lasted one more week, it passed away probably because its head was swollen and could tell that it was handicapped, R.I.P fighter
