He's Not Very Playful.

Sunny is really sweet! That perch is a great idea except i don't think my bird Blinkie would hang out on it. He prefers to chase my fingers!

Glad Sunny is doing better. :(

Was it a certified avian vet though? It always sits wrong with me when they suggest to add another bird without running tests. It wasn't very responsible advice and I'm glad you didn't take it.

Even after the vet visit I'd watch him really closely. If anything changes (other than good things like him coming out of his shell more) get him to an avian vet. A dog and cat vet is more likely to look a bird over and tell you a lot of nonsense because they aren't educated or equipped enough to actually check the bird inside by running tests. And a lot of them like to say they know a lot about birds just so you'll bring it in and pay them but as I said, they just don't have the education or resources and should never try to pass themselves off as a "bird vet."

Anyway, enough with my rambling. I hope Sunny continues to improve. He's such a cute budgie!

SUCCESS !!!

I've found something that makes sunny happy and actually makes him act like a "real" bugdie should...

I've Brought into the house some natural things like plants and branches to make it more like he is in the outside enviroment. and placed a few around where he hangs out the most.... and OMG ! he is making chirping sounds again... this is new to me seeing he hasnt chirped happily the whole time i have had him ! and he just seams lively now... actually moving around more and looking interested at things....

no sucess with any of the store bought budgie toys (what a waste of money)..... he just likes anything natural...

maybe thats all he needed some familiar objects....

no idea... it was just a friend of a breeder i know who he gets to check out all his birds if something is wrong...

Aww, that's wonderful! Just be careful which plants you use as some are poisonous (I hate that I always sound so friggin' negative!)

But I am so happy you found something that Sunny likes! And don't fret over the toys. He might still warm up to the store-bought ones with time. :) You're such a good budgie parent, going through such lengths just to make him feel happy and at home.

yep the plants are all safe as far as my knowledge goes.... all native around here so easy acess to suply a fresh branch...

just making sure i am doing all i am capable of to give this new found friend the most comfortable / happyest / healthyest life i could possibly give....

i definitely think everyone's advice about the avian vet is very good! but assuming his bill of health comes back perfectly clean (which i really hope it does!), do you think maybe it's just possible that he's lonely? i know you said you spend a lot of time with him, but in your first post you mention that he was bought from an overcrowded cage, so perhaps he just misses the company? just a thought :P

The advice someone once gave me was to never get a second bird purely for the sake of giving your original bird a friend. You never know what might happen. They might not even get along. Adding a second bird should only be done because YOU want a second bird and are equipped to house it separately and give it separate attention in the even that something goes wrong.

But if she decided that she wants another bird I'd make sure that the first one got a full run of tests by an avian vet and that the new one got a strict 30+ days of quarantine. He might benefit from a friend, but you also don't want to risk illness.

i just realized that when i posted my message yesterday i had missed page 2 of the messages! (Laughing out loud) i agree devvle, i don't think an owner should add on another budgie unless they are prepared to take the chance that the 2 won't get along very well and may need to permanently be housed separately, it's always a good thing to mention! But from the sounds of it sunny is coming along rather nicely now! glad to hear you've been able to get him making happy chirping sounds finally! ;)

Does it happen a lot that two young budgies don't get on? I am thining of a friend for George. I have read the information about having two cages next to each other for some time before introducing them.

What are your experiences with having "another" budgie?

I wouldn't say it happens a lot but you do have to be prepared just in case.

And as far as putting the cages next to each other, don't forget to quarantine the new bird first for at *least* 30 days.

okay so it has been a few days now since last post !

Sunny is better than i could have ever imagined... he loves the whole " NATURAL ENVIRONMENT THEME" i have going in and around his cage at the moment... and he is even making kissing noises and attempting to say his first phrase " i love you ".

The more plants and branches i bring in the happyer he gets.... it is so good to see.... he must really like the plants and branches...

also for the 1st time i saw him playing... he was picking up a chain on his play gym and dropping it over and over again... sunny playing... omg i never thought i'd see the day !

as for store bought toys well he stood on one once... but no interest at all... but who could blame him when right now my lounge room looks like ur bush walking.... !!!

maybe he just wasnt stimulated or happy in his enviroment before ! so thats why he was quiet ! who knows...

Anyway i am happy to announce that sunny is actually acting like a bird should !!!

"round of applause for Sunny and you"!

Well done, that's really lovely to hear!

Julie
