Limit To How Many Words They Learn?

Just what the title says - is there a limit to how many words budgies can learn?

I got my Gill in December when he was 7 weeks of age....for the past few weeks he has been speaking and has (in my opinion) quite a good vocab, he can say:

good boy

you a good boy?

his name and variations on it

his knickname

the dog's name

hallo

okay

whatchyadoing?

He's very bright :emoticon112: - am i pushing it too much to expect him to learn more? will he forget what he knows if I try? (we have 'homework' regularly on his words throught the day including those he already knows).

I so love my little boy.

In short... no. We used to have a budgie who could say a massive list of words... The key is to work with him on one word/saying at a time. Once he gets it, you can start a new one. It's a matter of repetition... the more the better. You'll find he has words he likes more than others and uses more. Just keep a list so you know what he knows etc... Some you may need to repeat more, but they have a pretty good memory.

i don't recall a limit, tho i've heard of other mixing up the ones they have learnt or spitting out something that wasn't been trained.

Thanks all for the responses...right, now I need to think of some more things to train him to say!

Of course, the strangest thing is that I never taught him 'good boy', 'okay', 'cmon', 'whatchyadoing' or the dog's name...he picked those up himself ... which is embarrassing because that hints at how common they are in MY vocab...mm...perhaps I need to train MYSELF with new words first....LOL :glare:

Yes, they do pick up what they hear from you most often, even when you did not intend them to. I was delighted when the first thing my first cockatiel learnt, was to laugh like me.

My budgie does not talk but he knows all the tunes and sounds that all the cockatiels do. In fact, he taught my first cockatiel his first tune. He is still learning new ones.

You have an amazing little bird there. I've never had one that could talk.

Have you seen that film called "Paulie" about a parrot who could talk intelligently and who searched for his owner for about 20 years?

Yes it certainly sounds like you have an amazing mimic there, well done to you both. "Eagle" is the same age and i too have had him since early december but i can't get him to say hello yet. I repeat all the time and it seems as if he is trying to imitate my speech but... Perhaps success is just around the corner, I hope so. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Fixed double post

Their isnt really a limit as to how much your budgie can talk, just make sure when your teaching him the word, that you stick with the 1 word and not try others, otherwise you will confuse him

once he learns the new word, move on to a different one

A baby budgie I bred that went to live with his new owner....Rocky is the budgies name. He is so loved and spoilt. The first time I saw him at around the age of 8 months he had around 100 phrases and now that would be doubled. He is so smart he even dobs his "mum" in when her son comes to visit and Rocky tells the son that "mums at the casino !" :D He gets jealous of the cat Minky and when Minky is being cuddled Rocky yells out that Rocky is Mummy's best boy and Minky is a bad boy :D Pretty soon I will try and get some more video of him :)

I would love to see video of a good talker, cheers Kaz.

Havent there been records and studies of budgies vocab? Im sure i've seen it said that some budgies have obtained a vocab of over 2000 words and learned to speak in context. I hear tell budgies are as smart as a 2-3 y.o human child.

Wouldnt doubt it for a second. Even if budgies dont talk, they're all that sneaky!

The world record for most words spoken by any non human animal is actually held by a budgie called Puck, who could say 1,728 words. :D

^^ all I can say to that is 'HOLY PUCK!' hahaha. Seriously though, that is incredible.

KAZ, we need to see the video of the bird talking, that sounds so funny!

See, I'm not so sure tht too many words confuses them as I tried to teach Gill with only one word and then the sneaky so and so learnt the other words himself....infact, he learnt the other words far far better and quicker!

That is amazing :what:

My cockatiel Charlie turned out to be girl, I was a bit disappointed but she is a real cutie she whistles pop goes the weasle, woof whistles and does 2 different phone rings and she has just learnt to say hello.

When Gregs daughter Lisa comes to visit Charlie behaves like a boy and woof whistles her and does everything we have taught him I mean her to show off all in one go , you see Lisa is tall blonde and very pretty and Charlie thinks so too.

My Dad gave me a budgie that landed on his shoulder one day while he was at work (no one responed to Found posters) and we called him Shakespeare because he could talk so well.

It was funny when I'd occasionally take him down to the aviary to visit the other budgies I had he'd walk up to the other budgies and greet them with a "Hello" and ask them "How you doin?" and the like, the other budgies would give him the strangest looks.

If you want to see budgies who talk really well,go onto YouTube (I think it's just youtube.com) & under "search", type in "talking budgie". There are heaps of great little videos there, including budgies who talk in different languages- so cute!!
