Posted April 24, 200916 yr she has been eating more cuttle bone lately. before she would take a few pecks a day, but now she pecks it 5 times a day - possibly more. what if she dies of high calcium intake? i have heard that they CAN get sick by too much calcium... or is this normal? and can i use anything else apart from plaster-of-paris for making mineral bell/block? plaster of paris sounds chalky and unhealthy for budgies......... and i guess my budgie was happy today because i gave her a HUGE cuttle bone! she loves her cuttle bone. she pecks it 1-2 times a day. but not as much as my other hen.
April 24, 200916 yr is she actually eating it or just playing around with it. thats what most birds do with cuttlebone, they play with it and not eat too much. I've never made calcium blocks before so I cannot help with that,
April 24, 200916 yr Is nothing to worry about, she is probably not ingesting much at all. Some birds enjoy the feeling of biting it, but she may be feeling she is lacking something in the cuttle bone. It is not a high source of calcium so she wont overdose on it or get ill. Let her go- the only downside is they go through alot :thankyou:
April 25, 200916 yr Cuttelfish is just nuisance value- hens only destroy is without consuming it. For the amount of calcium that is in cuttlefish, birds would have to eat truckloads to get Calcium poisoning. There are far more effective wasy of getting calcium into birds.
