Eggs tossed out

Featured Replies

I have found 2 eggs thrown out of the nest, would this be by accident or would the hen have done it for a reason. She was still sitting on 4. I picked them up carefully, ye, my hands were warm, & put them back into the nest. Could it be that they are infertile?

Maybe....how long had the eggs been in the nest?

If you are breeding in flocks this is a normal thing that happens sometimes the female will leave the nest and another female will attack

When you picked up the eggs were they cold if so put them in the bin

You could try and candle the eggs to see if they are fertile or just leave them until they turn grey

Well I hope this helps and all the best

:)

Have just found all but 1 egg left in the nest, rest were on the ground and broken I feel so dam disappointed & as shattered as those eggs were. The first one was laid on the 1st April, maybe thats it----she was just tricking me :) I have not seen signs of any other hen going near her nest so really dont know why. When you say "candle", is that the obvious, you hold a candle to see through the egg?? Would a torch work the same?

HI Bev, that must be very hard to see all of them on the ground. Is this the hen's first time? Anything could have been the cuase they could have been infurtile, or she just didn't know what to do and so tossed the eggs out. Or as others have said another hen could be after her nest.

No question is stupid, how else to we get to know what we need. Candling is just as your thought you hold a stong touch light to the eggs, after 5-7days (I think) and look for faint red lines to know that something is growing, if clear then it is normally infurtile.

There would be no harm in letting her have another clutch now to try again. If your worried about the last egg getting broken then if you have another sitting on eggs you can move it over to her.

Good luck :)

Thank you for the reply, & yes, was the first time for laying, the one egg that was left she abandoned so I carefully placed it with another hen who had refused to leave her nest, no eggs there, she had one that was stuck to her chest but it was knocked off & got broken so I put it under her. It has since disappeared. One other hen has laid 1 egg 5 days ago & so far hasnt added any more. So for this season I dont think I am going to see any bubs at all, but at least I know now that 3 hens are capabale of laying, which has taken 2 years to get to this stage. I have been having major problems with a train driver who goes past our back fence where the avery is & sits on his horn continually, he has me on the ceiling most of the time so emagine what it does to the poor budgies, hopefully I have solved this problem by reporting him. So, I can only wait & see what happens in the future. Cant move the avery either.

Didnt see any egg on her face so have no idea. My other hen now has 3 so she is looking hopeful & her partner is very attentative so looks like a good match. I think the train problem may have settled down, the first couple of days after I complained he let me have it double (Laughing out loud), but I expected that. Thanks Lady :sport:

They are beautiful Lady, I love the "whites", will try & get photos of a few of mine in. I still have eggs in one nest & is looking very promising this time, I can also see into the nest from outside the avery. She is sitting on 4 that I know of, so fingers crossed.

Not sure if this worked, the blue is a very frustrated little girl, cant seem to find a boy that is interested. Now the big yellow pied, he is only interested ine one other hen who wont have anything to do with him, the cheeky little green loves them all, & is the smallest of the lot.
