April 26, 200916 yr They get this lunatic look in their eyes when their pupils shrink and they puff up and make kissing noises and bounce up and down wolf whistling. They're totally nuts, I love it . lol My partner's cat does that look whenever she see's a tennis ball (the little tiny ones, the normal sized ones are too big for my dog ) She steals them off the dog puts them in my shoes.. lol
April 26, 200916 yr I haven't had a lorikeet in 10 years- I forgot how much fun they are. Noisy!!!!!!!! But fun . They get this lunatic look in their eyes when their pupils shrink and they puff up and make kissing noises and bounce up and down wolf whistling. They're totally nuts, I love it I remember when I used to have a tame rainbow lorikeet, his pupils used to shrink and he'd puff up too, he was sooo funny! I used to play with him and he'd grab my hand and stuff! I miss him so much! Must get another one. Edited April 26, 200916 yr by maesie Fixed quote
April 26, 200916 yr Author Yeah both of these are tame enough to let me touch and pat them. Plus when I come in with their nectar dish they go nuts and jump on it and start drinking before I get a chance to put it down.
April 26, 200916 yr Amazing how they are instant best friends. What will happen to them long term? Will you rehome them?
April 26, 200916 yr I found some links for jumpers etc for Bobble... Some are overseas, but the pictures may give you some ideas... http://www.petparrot.com/ParrotCarePlucking.htm Right down the bottom it explains this suit... not great if his back is bare too though http://www.birdsupplies.com/Feather-Sweate...rots-p/avfs.htm Overseas but photos might be helpful http://www.flightquarters.com/bird-diapers...mvc?Screen=SFNT Feather sweaters/protectors- Overseas but photos might be helpful Edited April 26, 200916 yr by maesie
April 26, 200916 yr Author Amazing how they are instant best friends. What will happen to them long term? Will you rehome them? I'm not sure yet. They're so much fun, and I don't want to separate them now they're so friendly, so I'll just see what happens. Thanks for the links Maesie. I did actually try that first one- that's what Bobble is wearing in the pictures. I think I'll have to get an old sock and cut holes for wings and put that on him. It might work better because his back is completely bare. He hasn't got a single feather on his body except his tail, wings and head.
April 30, 200916 yr Author Here is today's rescue. An animal shelter phoned me saying someone had brought in a galah they caught in the backyard and took to it to a vet, who passed it on to the shelter. I arrived with a pet carrier and thick gloves, got in their aviary expecting the galah to screech and fly around, instead she looked at me with excitement and jumped on my shoulder . Turns out it wasn't an aviary bird, but somebody's tame pet. She refused to get off my shoulder, so we got her in a towel. All the way home in the car she kept shoving her head up against the door of the pet carrier so I could scratch her head, it was so cute . When I put her in the spare aviary, she jumped out and launched herself at the seed, like she hadn't eaten in days. Which she possibly hadn't. The vet and I are still looking for her owner, but until then she's staying with me. Name suggestions anyone? I like Rosie .
April 30, 200916 yr She is beautiful and she seems like a real sweety, Rosie would be perfect for her!
April 30, 200916 yr THIS website says you can make it from old socks. I think you leave the top bit and cut out the toe bit and heel... that way you don't need to sew or knit... put some buttons and stuff on them to chew on. HERE is a website that shows 4 cockatoos dressed up in Christmas socks ... so cute... scroll down shown in left of screen.
May 1, 200916 yr Author Thanks for the links. I had actually considered using a sock and cutting holes in it for the head and wings. Bobble is still in a cage inside because he chewed off his previous jumper .
May 1, 200916 yr In the days when I was a vet nurse and indeed since, I use old socks for all kinds of animal and birdie jumpers. Everyone has spare single socks. Failing that the sleeves of various size jumpers....childrens ones too. Love your seed containers in the aviary too Edited May 1, 200916 yr by KAZ
May 1, 200916 yr Author Thanks, yeah the feeders in that aviary are quite nifty. They're pvc piping in an L shape that run down the outside of the back wall and in through a large hole. The previous owner designed them to hold 3 weeks worth of seed which can be filled up from the outside. There was also a similar watering system too. It caught rainwater and drip fed it down sprinkler hose into another pvc pipe trough inside. We removed this because it was too difficult to clean the troughs while they were attached to the wall. But the seed holders are really handy, cause at least 6 budgies can feed from each holder at once.

May 1, 200916 yr Wooooooooo, I LOVE them!!!!! What a brilliant idea!!!!!!!!!!! (esp if you have friends looking after your birds and they're scared of them ) Edited May 1, 200916 yr by maesie
May 1, 200916 yr Author Can I see a photo taken from the back ? These 2 photos are the only ones I could find. This was when we first set up the aviary in May last year. You can see how the seed pipes come down the back wall and into the aviary as a trough feeder. Wooooooooo, I LOVE them!!!!! What a brilliant idea!!!!!!!!!!! (esp if you have friends looking after your birds and they're scared of them ) Funny you should mention that, he actually constructed them because he travelled alot and needed other people to feed the birds, so their relatives (who were terrified of birds) were able to top up the seed and water without entering the aviary.
