i read a book that said that you should not buy lots of seed at a time because it goes moldy.

if that is true how long until it goes moldy. It has never gone moldy on me.

i keep myn in a garbage bin with a lid that i get from bunnings

Yes it's true. if you buy surplus amounts than what your birds can eat they go "off" so to speak, the moisture gets it etc and the birds won't like it as much because it's not fresh... same as stale bread etc.

I make sure mines used up within 3 week as i buy a 20kg bag

Well I am not sure if that is completely right because most time when you buy seed it is normally from the year before harvest.

So maybe that is why you shouln't buy than a few months supply but I know breeders around here travel long distance to get their seed and they buy bulk enough to get them through the whole breeding season and they have a couple hunrd birds and at least 40 breeding cages going at any one time.

When I buy mine I buy 2 or 3 x 40kilo bags at one time and it gets me through half my breeding season I would buy more But can't afford to. I drive 200k return when I get mine.

I buy 100 kilos per month. Mine has never gone off or mouldy. I guess it depends on the age and condition of the seed when and where you bought it and what you keep it in and how well it is airtight and free from :"greeblies"

I buy 100 kilos per month.

Whoa :( . You must have a lot of budgies. Are all yours paired in breeding cages or do you have some in aviaries?

I buy my seed 20kg at a time from a place about 10 minutes away. I store it in a big sealable plastic rubbish bin and haven't had a problem.

Not all in breeding cages as birds must fly and exercise. Have about 300 or so.

Seed if kept correctly will last years. The quality however is debateable. Seed found in ancient ruins has been found intact and if my memory serves, it has been sprouted. A certain amount of moisture is already present in the seed at harvest time and is required for the seed to remain in a state in which germination can occour but low enough to allow correct storage. The key is to keep extra moisture out. This is what will start the degredation process of the seed. Mould will then attack if the bugs don't get in first. Seed can be kept in the freezer or fridge this will stop the emergence of moths which pretty much all seed has but the eggs are so small you don't see them.
