Posted April 21, 200916 yr My budgies who I am treating for worms are underweight so tomorrow i am going to a produce store and get some seed for them. They cannot have vegies at the moment so i want to get some good seed to help get some weight back on them. i know hulled oats and sunflower seeds are good for fatting up budgies but what else would be good for them and about how much hulled oats and sunflower would you mix with other seeds?
April 21, 200916 yr i would mix a very high concentration of both, possibly even give them a container of each seperately. normally we worry about concentrations of food when we do not want our budgies to get too fat. In this case, a fattening up is needed. I say give them a small bowl on the bottom of the cage with sunflower seeds and another one with hulled oats. Give them planty of millet as well. When they are fattening up, you can reduce it, mix it with normal seed, but at the moment, the mix is nowhere as important as getting them to eat it.
April 21, 200916 yr Additional to what you are doing and also additional to what Dave has suggested, put a bowl of rolled oats ( breakfast porridge type ) in there...they like them, easy to eat and will add the extra weight as well. Seperate bowls. Edited April 21, 200916 yr by KAZ
April 21, 200916 yr Author Thanks Kaz and Dave, i have been giving them millet sprays and they love them. I have rolled oats in the cupboard so i will give them some and then get some other seeds tomorrow.
April 21, 200916 yr Good suggestions above... When I was trying to fatten up my girls, I gave the separate bowls of each... in addition to their normal seed. It took mine awhile to eat them, but once they did, there was no stopping them. Good luck and please keep us updated on how they are going.
