Posted April 5, 200520 yr Was wondering if it is possible to sucessfully move an egg into another nest. Both of the hens are first layers & the yellow one has lost both of her eggs, first one was stuck to her chest & hit on the food dish which broke it, second I found on the floor of the avery broken, ( I assume that was hers ), she is still in her nest but has not laid any more eggs & this is a week or so ago that she lost them. My big blue hen is sitting on 6 & my thought was that if I was able to move at least 1 to the other hen would this kick off the instinct to lay again? :doctor:
April 5, 200520 yr you should only move eggs to another hen if she already has them if there are no eggs in the nest she will know its another hen has laid it and probably destroy it
April 5, 200520 yr First - giving the clumsy hen another egg will not make her lay more. She will only do it if she is on her cycle, the male does his thing AND she likes her nest. Second - leave the viable clutch alone. 6 is quite a few but if the hen is coping then let her - believe it or not - all that turning and rotating she is doing is her way of helping the eggs develop and she is managing their temperature and position just fine. Moving them would disturb them and probably REDUCE the number of successful eggs. --------------------- By The Way and FYI - budgie hens do not mind sitting on other budgies eggs - but keep it for an emergency - like the death of a sitting hen. Your current situation does not constitute an emergency.
