Posted April 19, 200916 yr I heard someone worry about their budgie getting too much calcium, I have never heard about it before so I ask you (because you are pros ): How much calcium are they supposed to eat before they get ill, and what are the symptoms? What will happen if they get "too much", is it even possible? If you have any good articles for me I would be happy!
April 19, 200916 yr Yes it is possible to get calcium poisoning. Like with everything, too much is unhealthy. I like to give my birds access to calcium though a calcium block and some cuttle bone. Other than that, they shouldnt need any more. Hens while breeding need a little more sometimes. Each bird is different, some need more and some need less. its about knowing your birds and working out how much to give and how often. If i see a bird really getting stuck into a calcuim block, then i know they need more so may give them a boost in the water etc.
April 19, 200916 yr I give calcivet once a week and twice a week to breeders. aswell as calcium bell and cuttle bone 24/7.

April 19, 200916 yr It's a very good product. Especially for breeding birds and weak babies. 1 drop to the beak and its an energy boost. Another similar product is avi-cal. I have never tried it but I beleive it to be the same sort of stuff.
April 20, 200916 yr ....remember with Calcium that they also need an intake of either Vitamin D3 or access to direct sunshine. The sunshine helps create Vitamin D3 which is used by the body to absorb the Calcium.
April 20, 200916 yr Hey Daz what are some things that contain vitamin d3? do any vegetables contain it? If your birds do not get access to sunlight, what is a good substitute for it? thankyou.

UV-lamps for birds work too, it is NOT the same lamp as the reptiles use though. Windows close the UV-light out By The Way.
April 22, 200916 yr There are no vegetables that contain D3 it is manufactured in the skin. Fish contain D3 as do mushrooms. My previous bird room was completely enclosed and to get around the D3 problem I had full spectrum lighting installed and once a week I gave Cod Liver Oil in the soft food. Cod Liver Oil contains D3 but must be used with caution as it also contains Vitamin A. High doses of Vitamin A are toxic.
