Banshee My Rainbow Lorikeet

Featured Replies

He is very pretty. Did you buy him as a pet or rescue him?

I'd love a rainbow lorikeet.

they don't even look real to me they remind me of being painted they are so gorgeous

It's no surprise why you called him Banshee :( . They are SO loud sometimes aren't they?

As a teenager I had a RL named Rosie. When we moved house we couldn't take her with us so we gave Rosie to my grandpa. One day a person came to the door saying they could hear her in the backyard and tried to buy her. Grandpa said no, and a few days later he woke up to find the aviary broken into and Rosie was gone :(.

Anyway, he's gorgeous. Have you bred him before?

Beautiful! My partner's cat caught one this afternoon, I got it off her as fast as I could but the poor thing was already dead :( I'm gonna have to make the cat a collor covered in bell's one of these days... :P

How'd you get it? Is it a girl or a boy? Is there a way to tell? How long have you had it? Is it tame? Do you need a licence?

It's gorgeous I want one! :(

Rainbow Lorikeets were taken off the licence list in Victoria about 8-10 years ago. Not sure about other states. I'd love a pair of Scaley Breasted Lorikeets. They are surprisingly cheap for licenced birds.

They are one of the funniest birds around. I have one named Buddy and he's very tame. I bought him for my two year old who was totally bessotted by him when he first saw him. Buddy talks and gives kisses (with his tongue) which to my partner is 'yuk' as their tongues are a bit furry on the end. He mutters under his breath, I think he's swearing politely. He lies on his back and plays with his toys. I could go on forever about him, he is the best. :)

Sunshine-The only way to tell if they're male or female is to have them DNA sexed. I haven't done it yet but will be very soon.

If you want a bird with mega personality I recommend getting a hand reared Rainbow Lorikeet (no offence to budgies either) :)

I have a pair (or at least 2) rainbow lorikeets, their not really tame but aren't wild either.

They were given to me by my cousin from Sydney who had to get rid of them because they were too noisy.

Shortly after they arrived one of them got clenched claw syndrome (apparently only effects lorris between Newcastle to Sydney). It got pretty bad to the point where he was almost completely parylised (could only move his head) and since there's no known treatment for the condition I finally decided that I'd have to put him down, next day went down to his cage to do the deed and he was showing signs of improvement so I left for a bit longer and by the end of the week he was pretty much back to his old self again. That was months ago now and you'd never even know there was ever anything wrong with him :)

If I do in fact have a pair I hope to breed them and hand raise the babies, they're great birds full of personallity and very colourful, the only thing about them that can get on your nerves is their constant licking!!!

You are very lucky to have a breeding pair and to have your bird survive that. I tried to buy a pair the other day, they were on display at a pet store. He said he wanted to keep them and breed them :D I will keep a look out for some.

I love watching Buddy have a bath, he makes a huge mess and loves diving into the water head first. I wish you all the best for your breeding pair.

I don't know if I have a breeding pair, I have two that I hope are male and female. Even if I have two boys that wouldn't be too bad as I know someone with a girl (it layed an egg) and they'd let me use her for breeding.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood. Would you get them sexed or just wait and see what happens?

I would like to know for sure what Buddy is just to satisfy my own curiosity.

aww he's georgeous, i have had my RL for 2 years now, his name is jack :D and he tends to swear quite a lot haha

as for the sexing, you need to have them DNA tested to see, but during mating season you can easily tell, as the female stretch's its neck almost parralel to the perch and bobs up and down to impress the male

I have two... we're not sure if they're a pair, but atleast one is a male (kiki) as he rapes my hands.... The other (lala) seems female and does not talk unlike kiki who never shuts up. They have a nest box now and spend alot of time in there together, but only time will tell. I also love the Scaley's i think they're gorgeous!!!! Lori's in general are gorgeous! i love the varied too, but they don't make great pets.

Here in perth a license is needed as they're seen as "vermin"..
