Vet Trip- Watched A Budgie Autopsy.

I took one of my new budgies to the vets this morning because one of the hens died last night before i could get her to the vet so i wanted to find out if the other budgies have the same problem as what killed her.

I decided to try a new vet because i was not happy with the one i had been seeing. The vet put some poo under a microscope and got me to have a look so i could see what was going on. The poo was full of roundworms and roundworm eggs. The vet wanted to be sure that it was worms that killed the hen so i had to go home and get the budgies body and bring it back so he could do a autopsy. He wanted me to watch the autopsy so i could see what killed the hen and see how worms effect a budgie. I was lucky i had not had time for breakfast before i went to the vets. He found about 20 worms, all about 5cms long in the intestine. He did say that because there was so many the budgie would have been full of worms before i purchased her and the 6 others i have left are probably all infected with worms. Even though i did treat them with Ivermectin when i got them 2 weeks ago he say he would not have work due to how many worm eggs are in them. He has recommended i treat them with Piperazine which is a treatment designed just for roundworms. I still may lose more of them but i hope the treatment will work. I was so amazed when i went to pay for the visit, i was expecting a big bill with the test and autopsy but he charge me $30.

During the autopsy he did a good check for any other problems but he said it was just the worms that killed her. I am so sad about the fact that it is easy to worm your budgies and just because the breeder i got them from could not be bother to do it i have budgies that are suffering now. It was bad enough when i saw them with scaly face untreated but now worms as well. :(

Very cool you could watch it Deb... probably a good experience in the long run. I hope the new treatment works... I'd also be heading down to this 'so called breeder' and informing them of your morning. Pity you couldn't get photo to show them!!! Grrr

That is just awful god how hard is it to worm your birds that breeder need hi or her but kicked

20 worms that big! :( Right that's it, I'm worming my birds today. We did it only about 6 weeks ago, but we've added new birds since and I can't remember who had and who hadn't. So they're all getting it.

So sorry to hear about that. How awful that a breeder who sells their birds refuses to worm them. I'd go down there and demand some answers or a refund from him.

i knew when i bought the budgies that they had some problems, the breeder was selling them due to health reasons and admitted to me that he had not been caring for them properly. i still do not know why he was not worming though. He had 7 left for sale and i could not walk away and not take them and try to help them.

That was excellent that the vet allowed you to see.

I autopsy my own birds. Have a nice little kit I purchased from Kevin Gobby. He made the most excellent crop needles too. Sadly he passed on a few years back. When I can find the kit I'll take a photo of it and post.

Sounds like an awesome vet :(

I am so pleased you have answers and are able to treat them. Good luck and i hope you have no more loss.

Great experience for you Deb, and how brave you were too. A lot of people wouldnt.

When I was at our avian vet during the week he was saying the wormer in the water doesnt work as well due to ther birds avoiding the water when meds are in. He highly recommended the vetafarm worout gel wormer.jpg said it was better to use the pump on top and e deliver one drop to the birds beak. Anyway...his suggestion and they are all different in what they recommend.

I just checked the budgies and there is dead worms in their poo so the medication is already working. Yeah.

I bought an autopsy kit recently too, but need some training on what to look for apart from the usual microscope stuff.
