Posted April 5, 200520 yr I bought another new budgie about a week & a half ago. He's settled in nicely & I've already started step-up training with him and he'll walk up my arm playing and nibbling on my sweater and hands any opportunity he can get. I've noticed the last couple of days he seems to be sneezing a little bit, normally a couple times in a row. He's been eating & drinking perfectly fine and is quite active in his cage so everything else seems to be fine, I was just curious if the sneezing should go away on its own or is there something I need to get for him?? Thanks for any advice!
April 5, 200520 yr is there any discharge? if not have you been sneezing and your budgie is copying you? the other thing could be that is he sneezing after he is eating? ATD
April 5, 200520 yr yeah sometimes they sneeze when they get a bit of seed or some dust at the back of their throat after eating. if you notice that he is wheezing when he is breathing (you will have to get your ear quite close to find this out) then i think he could have an infection and would need to see a vet. some sneezing is normal though. mine sometimes sneeze after i give them a mist spray.
April 5, 200520 yr Some birds are sensitive to dust in the seed, and will sneeze after eating or being near the seed cups. Gradually changing the seed over to a better mix can help this if you think it is a possibility. I also think if you have the heat on, it tends to dry out the air and the birds' nasal passages and causes sneezing too.
April 6, 200520 yr Author Well there's no discharge & it doesn't really seem to be eating-related, just here or there & I don't think he's wheezing. The heat is definitely a possibility (& one I hadn't thought of either actually). It was raining a lot this weekend & as I'm in the basement the cold tends to just sink right in, so I did have the heat turned up a few degrees more than it was before. And the sun came out again today so I turned the heat back down and he's sneezed less..... Guess I'll just have to keep my eye on him & see if picks up again with the heat lower. Thanks for the replies!
April 6, 200520 yr It's probably just general sneezing. He might occasionally get an itchy nose. Like we do. We don't only sneeze when we're sick.
April 6, 200520 yr its also worth making sure your spaying any perfum or simeral near him. I thought Mitsiwas ill about 3 weeks after i got him, not realising that i had had a cold the week before where i could stop sneezing, took him to the vets, nothing wrong with him, in the end we worked out his was copying me sneeze.
