My New Budgie

Featured Replies

Posted

Yesterday I went on the hunt for a mate for my lonely yellow and green hen. I don't normally buy birds from pet shops because of the price, and the fact that they aren't usually in the best condition. But this boy's colours jumped out at me, and he's a decent size compared to all the other skinny small pet shop birds I see.

I have other yellow faces, but most of them are a bright intense banana yellow, whereas this one's face is a really pale lemon. That and his teal body was what made him stand out.

I haven't named him yet- any ideas?

My favourite mutation. You picked very well.

He is an excellent quality colourfull budgie.

Maybe you should think about quarantining him away from other birds. Worm him and treat for other diseases as some petshop birds do carry disease.

I agree about quarantine............please take him out and keep him seperate for at least 30 days.....AV is losing a lot of birds right now due to hidden diseases transferring to her birds

Lovely bird.

I kept him separate in a cage and sprayed him for nits and mites, checked for signs of scaley face, and gave him worming treatment in his water. He appears in perfect health, so that's why I introduced him to the aviary. Wouldn't he appear sick if he was carrying something?

What is his colour mutation called?

No...carriers appear healthy but transfer disease to other birds. You cannot tell by looking at him.

He is a YF skyblue normal

The people that come on this forum & say they went to a pet shop & brought a budgie, after all the posts

on here about pet shop budgies. There may be some healthy birds in a petshop, but they are in with un healthy

one,I auction poultry & birds of a Monday,to be honest,at times I have said,I will not put that bird up for auction

It will dead before you get home. These are dealers buying these birds,Munchie, how old id this bird you brought,

has it got a leg ring on if not how do you know that its not 5 yrs old.

Agree with Macka. Their may be a few healthy birds in the mix but the majority could be carrying any number of diseases and not showing any signs. Until you get home and you notice all your birds getting some deadly disease.

He's not sky blue, the pictures make him look like it. He's actually a deep teal green like this.

I only joined this forum in December, so excuse me for not reading every single post ever made here. I don't read every thread and haven't seen any about pet shops budgies. And no I don't know how old the budgie is.

I didn't come here to be criticised about everything I do with my birds. If you don't like the way I do things, perhaps helpful advice would be better than snide comments.

And just exactly where am I supposed to buy budgies from? I'm not a member of any clubs, I don't know any other budgie breeders. There are 2 annual sales within driving distance of here, that's it. Where do you suggest I buy birds from?

He is a YF skyblue budgie. The yellowface after his first moult bleeds the yellow colour through his skyblue body feathers creating the colour you see now.

As a baby he would have looked like this one...

If you imagine putting a pale yellow wash of paint over his blue feathers you will see the colour he has ended up being now

he looks like a yf2 skyblue to me. the yellow goes into the body colour after the first moult and a new colour comes out, seafoam green or aqua.

What a beautiful bird! ..and I agree with the others about Quarantine. It is very Important and as hard as it seems to not let your new bird with the others right away is very well worth it! I have two birds in quarantine right now and it is sooooo hard lol I just want to let them with the others already but I rather be 100% sure they are healthy and not carrying any diseases before I let them with my other birds that I love to death :)

Oh and I'm with you.. I have to buy my budgies from petshops as well since there's no breeders or clubs here either ..and that's why I like to be extra careful about Quarantine. - Quarantine is free so why not?

but anyways.. Your new bird is just gorgeous :D
