Got distracted over the weekend by all the sport on.

My Bunnies beat the broncos, and I watched the dogs beat the Titans. With Nth Qld losing to the Tigers and the Maroons getting beaten up, it has been a bad week for Qld Rugby League.

I watched the swans lose to the Blues, I watched the Wallabies lose to the All Blacks, I have been watching the aussies play badly at Lords.

I will get back to the breeding room this week.

There have been some changes with my pairs.

Caesar is doing well as a single dad, and his two should fledge soon.

Twitch and kiwi have their second little one now.

Earl and Latte have 3 healthy looking young ones.

Dumb and Kestral still have only 1 - none of their have hatched.

I have returned Cino to the aviary as she has had a day or two to rest and recover. She layed eggs, but raised none, so she was not tuckered out. I have left Dumb in there and on the advice of someone more knowledgeable than me, I have added a new mate for him. A white DF hen who is just over 12 months old.

Thanks GB.

It almost didn't happen though. I caught Cino and took her out to the aviary in a small carry box, then opened the door and she flew out. I caught my DF in the net, and decided that she was secure enough in there, that I did not need to put her in the carry cage. Anyway, to get out the door of the aviary, I held the carry cage and the net in one hand, and worked the lock with the other. I got out and was walking towards the door into my house, to go through to the garage, when I noticed my DF had wriggled up and was almost out of the net. I walked under the pergola, and she slipped out. She was free!!! She flew towards the door, and realising it was closed she turned and flew back my direction. I had one chance. I took a big swing with the net and woosh, she was caught again!! I clamped my hand on the net above her. There was no way she was getting out again. Luckily I was undercover or she could have flown straight up, and luckily she seemed a little unsure of where to go, as I managed to catch her. All up, she was flying free in the backyard, albeit under a pergola for about 1-2 seconds.

Scary experience, high heart rate, i am going to get a cup of tea and have a lie down - :D

Wow !! So well told I could imagine being there  So, so glad you caught her. That pairing will be a good one. Hope your DF hen can overlook his MESSY FACE and see his inner beauty :D

so glad she was caught such a lovley hen

i was wondering dave you say you think the chicks were getting a virus or infection

so you think it was the hen who was passing it on

is it possable the cock was the one who had the infection or virus ????

as if they were feeding each other mabe the both got it

or mabe dad only had it

as he looks like he was feeding well

just i thought

however i personally dont think it was that

i think it was related to something else

how old were the chicks when they did die

i know the little one was weak and sickly looking after being all good but is it posable that mum feed new chick a bit more than the other chick overwelmed mabe ....which chick lived was it the second one hatched ???

anyway best of luck dave the albino and spangle are beautiful

so and you have a few more this is good rezult for first try at show stock breeding for quality(if thats your aim)

Edited by GenericBlue

:D wow lucky you

the hen has good directional feather and rounded top skull the male has a good frontal rise and directional feather but not as good as the hen it will be a good pairing cart what to see the babys

I was going to put these guys down together earlier, but decided against it. If you go back to page 1, I think you will find this is the case.

I cannot guarantee that it was not the father who was passing it on. It was one of the two. I suppose my thinking is that I know the breeder of father, i know the quality birds that he has, and if it is from him, I would think it would be very strange. he is younger than the mother, and i expect less problems from him.Interestingly, the two chicks I have moved (one I fostered as an egg) both seem to be thriving, so i do not think it is a gnetic defect, but rather, something in the crop milk they were receiving.
Well I have ahen right now that two days in a row has opened eggs too early and I find the egg with only half the shell left on it and a dead cold chick inside the egg.....I put millet in her box now as a distraction :)

I have had similar problems Dave and I was told it could be yellow belly. So I had to dose them all on tripleC or similar.

Since i moved the young one and the egg, which has since hatched, the babies are flourishing. That is what makes me think it was mothers crop that had the infection

Just did a clean out.

One of Twitch and Kiwi's little ones did nto make it. Seems to ahve bleeding from the mouth, could have been a deformed crop.

Caesar's kids are well.

Dumb and Kestral have their foster nephew/niece growing well, and their first little one hatched, so that is very exciting.

Earl and Latte still have their 3 (1 of which is a foster from Dumber and Kestral) going strong. Needs to be rung soon.

Dumber has been checking out the nestbox but DF has yet to make any moves in that direction.

One spare cage, and I think my first pair of clearwings might go in there. I will keep you posted

Since you are on holidays I guess more photos will be coming ? ..........tomorrow B)

may not of been a infection dave

but i guess you will not know this till you breed her again

if it was then the same thing may reaccure due to cock mabe holding it as they were very intermate and feeding eachother

personally i think it was some other cause but just if you do have it reacurre mabe think abuout having both birds tested and the new hen for an answer (as im sure you would)but im interested to know for myself what the cause of this may have been

possable the mum just wasnt feeding them well enough and they just became weak she may of only let dad feed this meaning not enough crop milk ????i dont know does the male produce crop milk too?

There are so many things it could be, that it is virtually impossible to rule out. If i get them tested, and nothgin shows up, I am in the same situation. I am not going to breed her again. This is why she was down for breeding now, she is an orange right, so this means she is turning 4 this year. This was her shot. I have had a similar problem with another older hen, and the young seem good in another nestbox. If Dumber and DF have young, and the same thing happens, then i will know that it may not be her, but it may be him. Somehow i doubt it.

Yes yes, tomorrow will do. have to take them on my phone until I get a new camera. The main reason I am looking forward to finishing my breeding room is that I went out and left Caesar's cage open. The door did not fall properly. I came home, opened up the garage door, which is a double roller door, closed the door, looked at the little white one who had made her way out and was sitting on a ladder that is in there so she can climb back in tonight and said "Oh S$#t!!!", as I realised that the door to his cage was open. Not only had he not escaped, but he was comfortably sitting there, making sure his daughter was okay. In the breeding room, even if they got out of a cage, they would be trapped in the breeding room. In the garage, they could quite easily fly out the door.

Do you mean she is GOLD ring ? If so GOLD is 2006 making her only three this year.

I went through and put some more rings on last night, legrings on birds, I am not Liberace!!

Anyway, I shoudl have ringed one earlier, and try as I might, one was too big for the ring. There was no way the 3-1 toe ratio was going to work, and the 2-2 toe ratio was also proving troublesome. What do i do in a moment of budgie crisis? I called Kaz. Kaz suggested I oil the leg and foot up.

So I got a syringe, filled it with olive oil (health conscious even then) and coated the leg. I used the 2-2 toe ratio. I managed to get the ring on. What a relief.

I checked this morning and all is good. One leg ring has slipped off a little one, so I sat it aside and will put it back on tonight.

Caesar's little girl is out perching 24/7 whilst his son is spending some time in the icecream container in the bottom of the cage, and at other times, he is wandering around the floor. I put him back int he nestbox at night, as I think it would be warmer for him, but he does not like being the only one in there.

Chick update

Caesar - 2 fledging now

Earl and Latte - 3 rung chicks (1 a foster)

Dumb and Kestral - 2 unrung chicks (1 a foster) - the eldest had the ring come off

Twitch and Kiwi - 2 unrung chicks

Dumb and DF - no nestbox interest yet.

Just a thought to, I am not sure if people remember, but when I went to Perth at the beginning of the year, I had a bird that had broken her leg, and so it was staying at my parents house in a small cage. They took it to the vet and it recovered well. That bird was Kiwi, so I am so pleased to see her being a very good mother. Obviously her leg is great, as she can take the full weight of her partner when mating.

This was her during that troublesome time.

P1010010.jpg

Proof if there ever was that injuries can be overcome with good vet care, and helpful parents!!!!

Pics to come, I know, I said that before, but they will turn up.

still no photos, but updates

Caesar has been doing a good job. I removed the nest box today as the Albino hen perches and the opaline spangle spends all his time in the ice cream container.

Earl and Latte have 3 growing young, all who are rung. All look to be opalines, as is expected.

Twitch and Kiwi have 3 little ones so far, with more expected.

Dumb and Kestral now have 3 little ones, one who is rung, and more expected.

DF has begun to check out the nest box, so hopefully her and Dumber will have some eggs coming soon.

Photos when i can.

Dumb and Dumbers breeder was talking to me today about how well bred those boys are. I was able to tell him they are breeding. Hans also may be putting his cull birds on BBC for sale when he is ready. I spoke to a couple of breeders today about putting there culls on here before other places :P
