July 14, 200915 yr The chick was a bit pale in this photo but it is much worse in this one. Sorry to hear the news dave. Was there meant to be a second photo?
July 14, 200915 yr Author Sorry, typo, no new picture - yet. I spoke to kaz and she said it add some Triple C to the water, so that is done. I also trimmed the vent of some birds - Luthor and his lady (Lutino I bought from Cec Gearing) Now I had always assumed the Lutino was an 06 bird, however on closer inspection I think the ring is purple. This means that she is at the very end of her possibly breeding. She gets one more go, then she goes out to pasture. Such a shame as she is one of the best looking hens I have.I forget to grab the number. She may be a french moult survivor as she loses wing feather very easily and is absolutely terrible when anyone goes to catch her. Well, checked on things before I went to bed. A few more pics Caesar's chick are very cute. they look like they are trying to scramble out - the great escape. Here you can see Dumber and Cino's chicks together, and then the sickly looking little one on its own. It is hanging in there, but I am concerned about its legs. Kestral and Dumb have another egg Earl and Latte's little one is coming along well. I did not get any photos of Twitch and Kiwi's eggs, still seix or seven - I forget now. She is sitting, so I let her be. Edited July 14, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
July 15, 200915 yr Author Not much i can do when they are so young, but I will leave him there and see how he goes. You never know, there is always hope.
July 15, 200915 yr Is that lil chick a spangle opaline? Interesting to note so much body colour suffused up the neck/head already. Comes with breeding some opalines eh - although i havent seen a great many with suffusion that high.
July 15, 200915 yr Author I am thinking he has to be an opaline. Too much blue for opalescence I think. We will see

July 15, 200915 yr Author the bit that has not been plucked, yes. I think it is a little boy at this stage, so that means Caesar is split for Ino and also opaline. Edited July 15, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
July 15, 200915 yr He's missing head feathers now too Dave if the dad is feeding them it might be a good time to remove the mother :thanks:
July 16, 200915 yr Author okay, I removed Mum to a seperate cage. Dad appears to be feeding, but I will change the nestbox material later today, ading more seed and millet to try to encourage he little ones to begin/continue nibbling. We will see how things go. Little sickly dude is hanging in there. Edited July 16, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn i cannot type, i can spell, just not type!!!
July 16, 200915 yr Author I seem to be only one writing in this thread, but that is okay. It is like an online blog for me in some ways, so as long as I entertain myself, then I am happy. I have removed Caesar's lady as she was feather plucking, despite the millet and seed in the nestbox. Caesar appears to be feeding his young, so that is good. Dumber and Cino had 2 chicks, the sick one and a younger sibling. I looked in the nestbox this morning and thought, "that sickly little one looks better", then i did a double take. There were still 2 chicks, but the sickly little guy had not made it, and he was dead in the nestbox. No big surprise there. He was removed. Two healthy chicks in that nestbox though. Dumb and Kestral are sitting on 5 eggs. Twitch and Kiwi have 7 eggs, and the first should hatch any day now. Earl and Latte have 2 little chicks, and another 2 or 3 fertile eggs to hatch. No sign of interest from Luthor's lady. I might remove the nestbox and put them back in the aviary. Next time Luthor goes down to breed, it will be in the new breeding room.

Great news being a plucker kaz what do you do for future breeding of the hen ???? soz to ask question on your thread dave but wondered do you keep breeding them or no
July 16, 200915 yr being a plucker kaz what do you do for future breeding of the hen ???? soz to ask question on your thread dave but wondered do you keep breeding them or no Just watch them in the future. There is no hard and fast rule about this......... some people say a plucked baby in the nest becomes a plucker itself...this is NOT TRUE. A hen may feel anxious over one clutch of babies and pluck and may be fine the next time. She may single out just one chick and be fine with the rest. I would watch them and be aware but I would not cull. However if the hen was the kind to scalp a baby I would not breed with her again and she may well be culled in a more permanent way.

July 16, 200915 yr Author Sometimes breeding is fantastic, and we all ooh and ahh, and sometimes, it $ a complete mystery that leaves us bewildered and upset. Dumber and Cino have now lost 2 young. I am concerned that they get to about 3-4 days old, and then they die. This one had a very yellow belly. I am concerned there might be a problem with Mum feeding them. To that extent, i have fostered the youngest one into a Earl and Latte's nest, where there are 2 little ones, so all the young are under 4 days old. This, I hope, will give this little one the best chance for survival. I do not know why this is happening. The young all end up very pale, with a very yellow belly, and a big red dark patch, that may well be internal organs appearing through very pale skin. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
July 16, 200915 yr Young chicks with yellow belly in my experience are due to being hatched too early and not fully absorbing the eggsac before hatching. Some Mums help the chicks out of their shells early. I may be wrong, but this has been my experience with it.
July 16, 200915 yr Author I am thinking that it is somethign passed on by mum, thus the moving the little one to the new nestbox. In a previous breeding season, i waited too long to move newborns and ending up losing some. This year, i would rather take the chance and move them early Edited July 16, 200915 yr by Dave_McMinn
