October 5, 200915 yr Author As promised, here are the First are the kids in the Kinby cage. The two boys are the sons of Dumb and Kestral. The 3 pieds and 1 cinnamon winged grey green are the daughters of Twitch and Kiwi The pile of jelly beans are actually 3 in number - the youngest underneath you cannot see and he/she is only a day or two old. These are the offspring of the green cock and greygreen hen. Here are Kiwi and Twitch poking his head in with their two youngsters. Sorry about the bars. These 3 eggs belong to Bruticus and his Albino hen. The darker looking one has only just been layed, so I am not classifying it as infertile just yet. The two spangles and the rear of the DF spangle you see are in the DF widows nestbox. The spangle, the DF spangle, the opaline grey and the Opaline cinnamon grey are all in Earl and Latte's nestbox. October 5, 200915 yr now now Kaz. It was you who told me that you grow to love that which you once hated. I lied, I was confused, I was leading you astray....go back to your original way of thinking............
October 7, 200915 yr Author The eldest spangle in with Earl and Latte keeps leaving the nestbox, so I put an ice cream container in the cage, with some wood shavings and some seed in it, to encourage him/her to pick and eat. Anyway, I picked the little one up and put him/her in the ice cream container. Earl came and checked out the container and all was fine. Then Latte came and checked out the container. She jumped straight down on to of the little one, pinned him/her and proceeded to attack him/her. This happened in the space of 30 seconds as I stood there. This is all it took for me. I removed Latte straight away. I do not want them having another clutch, and Earl should be doing the feeding now anyway, and if Latte is going to attack one, she is going to attack them all, so best be proactive, well reactive after 30 seconds, but you know what I mean. All the others are going well. Little guys in the aviary are moulting. Icarus is having a particularly hard moult. A lot of blood on his feathers. At first I thought he had been attacked, but closer inspection reveals that it is just some tough feathers.
October 8, 200915 yr Author Kiwi and Twitch look like they will only have 2 in their second clutch - one grey pied and one green or greygreen pied. This smaller clutch does not upset me as raising young ones is always a strain on the birds. They have had 2 clutches for a total of 6 birds, 4 of which are females and 2 of which are not sexed yet. The two eldest cobalt spangles - one in DF widows box and one in Earl's box are both out. The one in DF Widows box knows how to get back in so he comes and goes. As previously mentioned, I set up the ice cream container for the other one. The new pair of the green cock and greygreen hen are constantly checking out the box, and all looks good. More :ohmygod: tomorrow
October 9, 200915 yr Author I was looking at birds to put in breeding cages today, and it seemed that every birds I grabbed was going through a moult- either in the middle or coming to the end of their moult. I have decided to give the birds another 2 weeks before I consider putting any more down. This will give them time to get over their moult.
October 10, 200915 yr Author As promised, some new pics. They have all just enjoyed a course of spinach and corn, so you will understand if they are a bit messy. In the kindy cage, the 4 girls from Twitch and Kiwi and the two spangles - on DF one SF from Dumb and Kestral Twitch and Kiwi have 2 new young - one grey dom pied and one green-based dom pied This is new pair I put down - Green cock and GreyGreen Hen. She has taken to the nestbox very well for a first timer. Bruticus and his Albino hen have 5 eggs now. The 3 young of my first Green cock and GreyGreen pair The Nestbox of the DF widow. Here one SF spangle has fledged whilst the DF and the other SF spangles are still in the nestbox. The Nestbox of Earl and Latte - Latte is back in the aviary now, Earl is feeding his two adoptees - the DF spangle has left the nestbox, whilst I put the SF spangle back in as he cannot perch properly - and his opaline grey cock and cinnamon opaline grey hen young. I removed the ice cream container as Earl for some reason kept scaring the yung out of it, forcing the SF spangle to sleep in the seed dish, thus why I put him back in the nestbox.
October 11, 200915 yr Author See we do read your posts And it is greatly appreciated. No today, just some details. All kindy cage residents are good. Twitch and Kiwi have 2 youngstes, both dom pieds. The oldest is definitely male, and i think the youngest is too. New Green cock and GreyGreen hen have their first egg - in the nestbox. She layed one off the perch the other day, but she has layed one in the nestbox now and is sitting on it well. One spangle and one DF spangle have fledged in both Earl's cage and the DF widow's cage. All look good. All other young are going well and eggs look good. There will be a movement of some birds soon. I am already eagerly planning.

October 11, 200915 yr Author Good stuff Dave, you are doing a great job and your thread makes for very interesting reading!! I am looking forward to seeing what your dark green cock produces, he is a lovely looking bird! All the best Thanks mate, kind of you to say that.
October 12, 200915 yr Author Not a good day in the breeding room. The greygreen hen that had layed one egg off the perch then finally layed an egg in the nestbox appears to have eaten the egg she layed in the nestbox. She is a first time mother, so hopefully it spooked her and she will be fine after that. She spends a lot of time in the nestbox, getting it ready, so i think she wants to breed. The youngest of Twitch and Kiwi's little pieds, the little hen, has badly splayed legs, not jsut played, but they appear to be very twisted. I have given her a drop of calcivet to the beak, and using a sponge, pinned her legs in the right position. I cut as much off the sponge as possible, but I fear it is still too heavy for her, as she has her legs out the back. I do not think she can stand properly. I am going to reassess in the morning, and I may move to gauze and tape, we will see. Poor little thing. It feel it is more a hip problem and I am not sure what can be done there. Strange that young have been perfect, but not the last. Strange. My dark Green cock and his GreyGreen hen have youngsters. I rung them all. The last 2 have managed to slip their rings off, and I think they are not too big to get rings back on. I am going to try the youngest in the morning, after oiling the leg up, but they may become great stock birds, never to be shown. Tragedy really. Same thing happened with Dumb and Kestral's middle spangle. He is unrung. I need to be more attentive to ensuring they "still: have rings on. I check their beaks, bums, nestboxes, parents, but not their rings. My fault. Live and learn I suppose. Not a massive dilemma, but a little annoying. The little grey Opaline cock keeps jumping out of the nestbox, and I find him huddled in a corner. I am going to have to put a flat tray in the corner and fill it with nesting material and seed. Hopefully Earl will not get possessive over this like he did with the ice cream container.
October 12, 200915 yr someone once told me that if you have a big chick thats ring doesn't quite fit, put the leg in cold water, this contracts the skin and makes the leg a bit smaller, if it still doesn't work, apparently vodka works a treat. Something to ponder anyway ... I have never tried it but it might help you get those rings on!?
