Hi all,

 

I bought a big cage for all my birds about a month ago, all my budgies are absolutely loving it!

 

Today is the first day in a while that I have been at home all day and have had the time to pay lots of attention to them. So I've noticed a problem, sparrows keep getting into the cage. I don't know how theyre getting in, all the doors I have snibbed close coz Muffin loves to lift the doors up and down (yes, there are plenty of toys in the cage), I checked when I assembled the cage, there are no screws missing or any open panels. The only thing that I can think of, is that they're coming in where the tray is on the bottom of the cage (you know the ones that catch all the fallen seed and feathers etc).

 

How can I stop the sparrows getting in? I know that the sparrows and that have mites and I really dont want them to be passed on to my budgies. They like to annoy the finches also, but luckily cannot get into their cage....

 

Grr.... HELP?

I had the same problem. I hung cd's, tennis balls covered in aliminium foil, and lots of other shiny things above the aviary. It stops the majority of the birds.

Try putting smaller wire over the bit you think they are getting in... A temporary option so you can move it when you clean... if it works... great, if not, what size is your wire??? maybe they are getting in there???

If you think they are coming in through the bottom, then maybe one of those stretchy seed catcher things put around the bottom if the cage ?

Can you post a picture of your cage? Are sparrows that much smaller then budgies? If then can get in can the budgies get out?

Are they sparrows or finches? Finches used to always hang around my breeding room and they can get in all nooks and crevices.

I used to be annoyed by the Double Barred Finches getting in and eating my parrots' food, I ended up getting some bird netting from Bunnings. It didn't stop them for a couple weeks when they finally learned that if they tried to squeeze through the netting they got caught. I think it trapped about 20 or so and I found out that finches bite! Luckily they can't bite hard but they tried! :fingerscrossed:

Double barred finches are the biggest annoyance ever. They fly so fast and fit through such small crevices. They are everywhere at my place.

^ Aww I've never seen finches in suburban Brisbane.. nice to hear that there are many of them in other parts of SEQ, not so nice that they're being pests to your budgies.

That's what I thought first of all too, Elly.. couldn't picture a cage with any space another bird can get in that could also be safe to budgies. But having said that.... I think they are way smaller. Would be interested to know the cage set up.

They are pretty birds and they fly really fast and its fun to watch them. Now my aviary is bird proof I have no problem watching the finches. You see thousands of them on the fences and close lines.

I would assume that if a sparrow can get in, than a budgie could get out. It would also be an opening for mice. i hope you find the spot and are able to fix it easily.

Photo of the cage would solve all.

I have never had sparrows get into my aviaries should be careful as they spread disease
