Worse Day Ever

A few days ago I lost 2 birds, we thought it might have been due to the heave thunder storm or it might be sour crop so we did everything that we where told to and even moved them to a new aviary.

I get home tonight and I have 3 more dead on the bottom of the aviary and Harley my baby, my nine year old who started it all is sitting fluffed up on the bottom of the aviary. That's it no more guesses I take him straight to the vet.

So the vet does her thing, she calls me in to show me the slides and it goes like this

Vet - you see these round things

AV - it's cocccicodes (sp?)

Vet - yes good pick up, and these

AV - that's mega bac (feels like crying)

Vet - yes and I hate to tell you but all these things, well that is a general bacteria as well

AV - *cries*

She then does a crop flush and finds out that he also has cankers....

I am in shock, they had to get me a seat and the vet nurse was great so was the training vet who was trying to cheer me up telling me stories about her and the hand up a horse back side.

We weighed Harley in at 23grams :)

So we decided that those who are hit the hardest and those most important are going on a two does a day of a white cloudy med for 7 days and everyone else gets the clear meds two day then 5 days off then two days....

So far there is no signs of this in my breeding room which is good cause more of the good birds are in there. the vet was a little shocked when I said that I would catch 20 odd birds to medicate them but really what other choice do I have.

She said to be prepared for more losses and she really can't believe that Harley is still kicking be 9 years old and have so many things wrong with him. I am really thinking of getting him another cage and moving him inside on a permanent base WHEN he pulls through this.

I just can't take waking up to more dead birds tomorrow.....

sorry to hear about all your problems AV... Seems to be a bit of sickness around the budgie world at the moment... :)

Terrible news, hope you've nipped it in the bud. Has the old one been sick before with those problems?

No Harley at 9 years of age have never had an issue outside of stress molting which I had him on birdy prozac for, heck he has never even had worms! the vet kept telling me, 'At 9 I ams suprised that he has all of these and is still kicking, you sure he is 9?"

He is a tough old bird he will pull through!

So sorry to hear! I feel bad enough that i have 2 chicks losing flights and tail feathers and im running around trying to figure it out and fix it. Cant imagine what you're going through!

Thoughts are with you!

So sorry to hear this did you bring in any one new recently? Did the vet give you an idea what could have happened to cause of all this? Big Hugs.

I hope you are crop feeding the meds , or you might loose even more , sick birds dont drink much .

Keep an eye on them , fingers crossed for you

Yes we did bring in some new ones and we did quarantine but they are the ones that I have lost. Vet thinks they are the cause of the whole thing as the new ones have been the hardest hit.

were they from a show breeder,if so I would have a talk to him & see what problems

he has had & if he says no problems,Iwould ask around. If you brought them out of the pet

shop,put them down & clean all the area's they have,been in & start a fresh.Do not buy

from pet shops.

good advice, it is sad to have to think about putting them down...

I hope you don't loose more AV ((hugs))

Yes they where from a well known breeder near us. In fact the pet shop ones are the ones that are holding up at the moment!

Bad news for you buddy :( I have experienced cocci go through a flock and seen them drop like flies. A very scary and madly disheartening thing to happen. Hope things get better real soon. :)

another passed away in my hands last night and then I lost 5 more today.....

I just feel sick, the only think that I can be slightly thankful for is that there is not signs of this in my breeding room or in the birds still in quarantine or with the young bubs that have just fledged. These are the best birds we have so the ones we are losing it is really sad but not as bad as it could be. Also Harley is looking better not 100% but better

However on another note, we think a mouse got into one of the nest boxes and ate the "to hatch any day now" eggs of one of our pairs *cries again* it's so bad when you find the remains of the tiny little babies and mouse poo, so traps getting set everywhere tomorrow!

I'm very sorry for your losses Angelic Vampyre. I know how it feels to lose many birds at a time. I hope you can overcome this.

You are having a really rough time right now....I have been there and know how disheartening it can be. I am really sorry about your losses :D

My prayers are with you during this time AV. I know how hard it is to loose one, but multiple losses must be so emotionally draining. Hoping for better times to come your way very soon.

You say they are from a well known breeder,is he haveing any problems'

with his birds,if not,you mentioned pet shop birds, one of them may of

been carrying the virus,& has come under stress & spread it to the others,

I think youy are best to clean them all out & start again, you could finish

up chaseing your tail, trying to get on top of the problem.Just bite the bullet

& start again,it might be cheaper in the long run.

As heartless as it may seem AV, Macka is probably right. I spent all last year 'chasing my own tail' trying to eradicate the dreaded pooey bums and subsequent deaths that was plaguing my flock. It took forever and I spent a small fortune on preventative meds regimes. In fact, the top shelf of my fridge and the top drawer are dedicated to every possible budgie treatment known to me. And I was just trying to eradicate pooey bums, or pasting of the vent as it is also known - You, unfortunately are facing the triple whammy of Cocci, Mega AND Canker .... :D

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses! I can only imagine how devastated your fealing right now :( My thoughts are with you at this terrible time. Try to stay strong (as hard as it is ) Some things happen for a reason. Hang in there :budgiedance:

AV I was in the same situation 12 months ago. It cost me $700 to have autopsies and lab tests done to find out the problems with my birds. 14 died in onloy a couple of weeks.. In my case it was my feeding management. Too much Cod Liver Oil and then a bacteria infection and then posioning with a worming product.

But untill we knew that, I was in the same stituation as you. It is very worry some and I know what you are going through. Wondering when it will stop. But be strong. Macka's advice is a good one.

I am so sorry AV :budgiedance:

What a disaster. I hope you can find away to resolve it.

Thanks guy, sorry Macka but I am 99.9% sure I know where the virus has come from. I am not prepared to kill the rest of the birds. I have a bunch that cost me alot and are now starting to look better. I am prepared to continue to medicate those remaining. I know that I might sound like a bleeding heart but if I had to kil the remaining of the flock that would be it for me I would get out of Budgies altogether.

I will always give my Budgies the best chance they can get to survive. I know what they have, I know how to treat it and that is what I will do. I will continue to treat them, I know that I might have gotten to a few a little to late but the rest should be okay.
